Also Jay Blades choking up remembering the chap who saved his life one very low day for him.

He's very good at having people drop their guard. Disarming. He'd make a good counsellor in another life

He used to do a problem page in the Sunday Telegraph, and dispensed a lot of wise, humane and empathetic advice.

Thank you op- spellbinding. We saw her perform with Kenneth Branagh in the winters tale a few years ago- absolutely magical.

I saw that, she was brilliant. With Shakespeare, I usually find I need some time to tune in, but I have no problem following it when its Judi Dench.

I also have very fond memories of her with Michael Williams and others in the RSC's production of Comedy of Errors as a musical. I wish they'd do it again.

One of my favourite guest lists for a long time- she was sublime

It helps that he plies his guests with alcohol before and during his shows 😂

But seriously, he is very good at his job. A but like Parky. He makes it all about his guests, and always finds and draws out the best of them. He knows his guests like to, and are there to talk about themselves and/or their work and/or each other. Takes the spotlight right off him. Plus, cracking repartee from him backed by really through research. He’s great.

Obvs not as great as Judi, though!

The Grill Graham item on his radio show, which Maria McErlane joins him for, is always really good.

Sonnet 29, it's one of my favourites. Her delivery was wonderful.

notmyoldusername · 28/10/2023 17:30

Will it? Is she your mum?

She is fantastic but your comment is bizarre.

clary · 28/10/2023 17:30

I love Graham Norton too, this is a wonderful clip.

i was lucky enough to see JD as Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra in London with Antony Hopkins. “A Roman thought hath struck him” she was quite amazing. I’ll always remember her perfect delivery.

That was in response to a pp, not you @NancyPickford

Oh I love her. Even more amazing considering her memory is now on its way out. She is wonderful!

Ahem!

Judi is still as sharp as a tack.

She's had age-related macular degeneration for some time. She has to get other people to read her lines out so she can remember them.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 28/10/2023 17:38

I watched the show and yes it was a very warm episode. But did none of you feel that Jack Whitehouse cut across Jay Blades when he began to talk about his new DD? I didn't think JB had quite finished. I would like to have heard more from him.

Tunnocksmallow · 28/10/2023 17:45

I bloody love her. ♥️

ZiggySdust · 28/10/2023 17:48

Spellbinding indeed. She is truly a wonder.

What a treasure

Kittensat36 · 28/10/2023 18:03

I loved the story about Dame Judy Kenneth Branagh told - first day on the set of Murder on the Orient Express, he's up to his ears in directorial stuff and he sees Michelle Pfeiffer in tears. He thinks "now what? We've got weeks and weeks of shooting and something's upset Michelle already." So he asks her what's wrong and she squeaks out "I've just met Judy Dench." Apparently JD was just so sweet and welcoming - when she could be the big I am, Michelle was just blown away.

Amazing! Thank you OP.

Thank you so much for this @PuppyMonkey. I’d have missed it if you hadn’t posted it.

I loved this episode last night-I've heard Jay Blades talk about his life before (possibly Desert Island Discs, but definitely on R4-worth a listen) and it still made me cry. JD also made me cry-she's amazing ❤️

SuperSange · 28/10/2023 18:25

How do you find out what she's going to be in? I've not got much theatre experience but that was spellbinding.

@notmyoldusername which post does this relate to? I’m confused!

Jellykat · 28/10/2023 18:30

It was a great mixture of guests last night.. Judi and Jay made me really well up, and Jack was really funny and not too attention grabbing for once!

Judi is such a beautiful person, inside AND out
