Does anyone have Sky instead of Telewest?

As some of you may know and much to mine and my dd's disgust Telewest have stopped showing all Nickelodeon Channels.

I Went to look at the Sky Website tonight and discovered that I can get the same channels for £10 less every month. Seeing as I can save some money I am seriously considering moving to sky.

But...

On the website it says "You will need a viewing card from a pay-TV service to view ITV1, Channel 4 and Five. The BBC channels are available as part of your licence fee. Sky News is available without a viewing card. Non-subscription channels are not offered by Sky and their availability is out of Sky's control."

Does this mean that if I sign up to Sky I won't get Channel 4 or 5? or am I reading that all wrong? I don't know anyone locally with Sky they all have Telewest so I can't ask anyone.

thought I'd ask all the wonderful mumsnetters knowing there is always someone who has an answer.

well I have sky, the £35 per month package, which cnsists of everything literally, apart from 3 sports channels, or 4 (the sky sports ones) u obviously pay extra for the box office. I've never hard any probs with them, i've know ppl b4 to have the whole package one month, then go down to the £13.50 basic one, then back to a medium one as so on dep on funds that month. the only prob for me has been sometime in stormy wether the sky goes off and then we have to rely on normal tv. (but I think that's just the weather and our signal not sky it'self)

hi same problem here thinking of switching dh had the cabel 1st put in

ChristmasCracker · 17/12/2004 20:56

We have the Sky family package and we get all the normal channels plus loads more, it is great sooooo much better than telewest.

JanH · 17/12/2004 20:57

We have the "family package" which is all the non-premium channels - many many many channels, probably 75% of no interest to man or beast but including 3, 4 and 5 and all the Nicks - for £19.50 a month I think.

HTH!

Linnet · 17/12/2004 21:07

It was the £35 package that I was looking at. I was prompted to look at the website tonight because telewest have put off Nick, but I had been thinking about it before as the telewest prices were getting really High.

Wouldn't be able to get Sky until after christmas anyway though as I'd need to give telewest 30 days notice unless anyone thinks I could get away with pointing out that they didn't give us notice about Nick going off, probably not

We have Sky too and pay about £30 a month. Don't have films, sport or Disney channels, but pretty much everything else. I thought even the basic packages included ITV and Channel 4 and 5.

KatieMaChristmas · 17/12/2004 21:12

If you only get the free channels on a card (which I think costs £20) you will only get BBC channels and the freebies not ITV & Ch4(ie no subscription)

But if you buy a package you get them all

katzguk · 17/12/2004 21:12

we have sky the full shhbang! sports movies ect. No complaints, get soemone on here to ro give you there account number and you'll both get £30 of m and s vouchers, or i think dixons are doing a free digital radio!

If you do switch i can strongly recommend channel 619 and 620 pop and tiny pop great for music for little ones wihtout adverts!

Hulababy · 17/12/2004 21:14

We listen to Tiny Pop, just before 6pm. DD loves a boogie to it

Linnet - it means that should you want to just buy a dish to get the free channels (beeb and sky news basically - plus the shopping channels from memory? Whatever Freeview has I think) then they're pointing out you won't be able to use the dish to view ITV1, Channels 4 and 5. If you're buying any sort of package they will come with.

katzguk · 17/12/2004 21:18

my DD too hulababy! best bit though has to be that its proper pop (no sleezey videos unsuitable for children) and very few adverts (unlike MTV where there's an ad every 2 songs)

ChrisseyMas · 17/12/2004 21:19

hi like the idea of sky now

Linnet i feel the same as you. When I tried to switch on this morning saw the message and was so annoyed. I asked about sky installation in a shopping centre today and have booked for a free installation in January. I am sick of telewest and I hope they loose lots of customers because of this. I upgraded our package specifically to get Nick Jr but do you think they will be reducing my bill because it is no longer available - I doubt it.

ChrisseyMas · 17/12/2004 21:31

hi there think we will be doing the same

Linnet · 17/12/2004 22:15

I've been back and had another look at the sky site and looked at the package comparison page, you pick 3 packages and it tells you what channels you get with each package. Ch 4 etc are all listed it must be what Georgina and Katiema described that they were referring to.

I've also just realised that two neighbours across the street from me have Sky, we live in rented houses so we aren't allowed to attach the dish to the house but they put it on a pole beside the house, wonder if that costs extra. will have to phone and ask them about that and I'll chat to my neighbours as well. Can't believe I didn't remember they had sky, doh

I wonder how many customers Telewest have lost today, hhmmm
