Virgin River timeline (no S5 spoilers)

I so want to just suspend reality and enjoy Virgin River but the timelines are driving me insane.

Charmaine's pregnancy is the main objective measure of time. She was revealed to be pregnant in season 1 and has only got to, what, 7/8 months by the time season 5 begins?

That would be fine, but once you look at what has happened to everyone else in that short space of time -everyone has just fallen in love with Mel, she's like family, Jacks been shot and gotten fully rehab'd, Hope had a major accident and got diagnoses with a brain injury...the whole Preacher/Paige story., the Calvin storyline..Mel got pregnant, Jack proposed....

It's all just SOOOO MUCH.

I just can't take it seriously. I could live with it being quite twee and cliche escapism (the dialogue is very predictable) but the mind boggling inattention to time line just gets harder and harder to ignore as time goes on and has completely ruined it for me. Every meaningful event just has me thinking, "really? Five minutes after that?"

How did they get this so badly wrong?

I see someone on reddit has gone to the trouble of creating a spreadsheet of all the bonkers events viewed through the timeline of Charmaine's pregnancy and once seen it's hard to deny.

It’s such tosh but I do keep watching. I worry my eyes might roll right out of my head though.

I watch mainly for the incredible scenery and Jack. Trying to go slowly through this season but already on Ep 6. It feels like the writers didn't think it would keep being renewed so shove all of their big (predictable, definitely) ideas into a short space of time in case they never get to use them.
As an aside I rewatched The Walking Dead recently and had never realised Mel was in it before.

I completely agree. I'm only halfway through season 4, when Charmaine finds out the sex, so must be about 20 weeks? As you say, Mel is now a fully trusted, loved member of the community, already engaged to Jack. But it must be only have been a max of 4 months!

I enjoyed s5 and somewhat suspended belief. The most bizarre thing I find is the ease at which the characters fall in and out of love and from one relationship to the next. Bree is a good example - seems like she should be a rational human being from her job but she’s been in virgin river what a month or two going by Charmaine’s timeline and moved from abusive relationship to new relationship with went wrong multiple times and then moved on from that within what seemed like a few days? Pretty crazy. Maybe there’s something in the water though, as Cameron also seems a bit void of reality on the love front 🤣

I love it despite it being ridiculous. For full disclosure I also loved Sunset Beach 😂

GatherlyGal · 13/09/2023 08:48

I think my favourite plot line was Mel just deciding on a whim to have an embryo popped in while she was in town for something else.

Psychonabike · 13/09/2023 11:50

@GatherlyGal I know! The things you can achieve in a day...it's almost supernatural

I do love a bit of light hearted escapism and tv that is less demanding than usual, but the absolute farce of the timelines is ruining this for me. I just can't get lost in it like I'd want to.

I liked the actor who plays Jack when he was briefly in Grey's...and initially found him attractive. But when you add the timelines to his character development in VR, he becomes utterly unattractive. I mean he's an absolute mess. If you consider all his drama -alcoholism, PTSD type stuff, going back and forth on how he feels about being in a relationship etc etc- and the time scale it's occurred in, he is seriously high maintenance. You'd never know who you were going to wake up with.

It's such an odd show. Lovely scenery, cozy sewing circle and feel good community events beside murders, drug gangs, rape and that random gang of people living in the woods? And the timeline makes even more surreal.
Love it though

GatherlyGal · 13/09/2023 12:38

It's like someone decided it was too schmaltzy so they had to bring in "bad things" like drug trafficking and kidnap etc but without a lot of thought about whether it fits together.

I'm finding season 5 is almost unwatchable tbh because its gone from a bit cheesy to total nonsense.

jay55 · 13/09/2023 13:33

It's clearly an elephant pregnancy.

I gave up part way through season 4.

WeWereInParis · 14/09/2023 13:12

Has anyone read the books they're based on? I'd be interested in how closely the storylines follow them

Silverstar2 · 14/09/2023 20:48

What is the age difference between Cameron and Muriel? She seems A LOT older than him.......?

Bananasplitlady · 14/09/2023 21:15

I googled them the other night (#saddo) - she's early 60s he's 45 in life.

Ididivfama · 18/09/2023 22:41

I love all the ridiculous aspects and can sort of brush it aside but Charmaine’s pregnancy is one thing I can’t stand. Just let her give birth already! Most of her plots she could do as a new mum.
