I'm watching The Mentalist from the beginning

I thought I'd seen most of them, but it turns out I've only seen three or four per series so there are loads that I've never seen before.

Two things, for the first two series if the actor was someone that I recognised then that was definitely the killer. In season three somebody obviously caught on to that and the most well-known actor stopped being the killer. Second thing, Van Pelt's love interest is a guy name O'Loughlin, which is driving me insane because they pronounce it O'Loff-lan instead of O'Lock-lan. I did a quick Google and apparently that is how it's commonly pronounced in the US, but still it's really annoying every time they say it.

Ooh!!! That’s a really good shout!! I loved the mentalist!! I think I’ll join you!

GallowsHumous · 04/09/2023 22:58

Oooh I'd forgotten all about this! I stumbled upon an episode randomly about 15 years ago when in America and was hooked. It helped that the first episode I saw was a Red John one, but let's be honest they're all good. Patrick Jane is my ideal man. Such a great series, enjoy OP.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/09/2023 10:28

It's aged surprisingly well, sometimes when you go back to older series they seem quite jarring in attitudes and vocabulary. I think it helps that it never had any basis at all in reality, the whole thing is total fantasy. So it's only really the phones and those very low-waisted trousers that seem dated.

I loved The Mentalist, until it got to the last season or two, then I stopped watching as it became a bit tedious and then Red John's actual identity made sod all sense! Patrick Jane is a fantastic character though.

He wasn't exactly ugly either Wink

I adored his car

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 06/09/2023 09:41

I've never been in that model of car but those old Citroens used to make me really car sick, much more so than any other car brand. They had very bouncy suspension. Every time I see it pull up on screen my stomach has a slight muscle memory of the car sickness. Grin

Oh, I love Jane and Lisbon. It's my comfort watch, because it's got the procedural formula but the acting and storylines are good enough not to make it boring. And Simon Baker was phenomenal, and not at all hard on the eyes.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 06/09/2023 10:07

Kimball Cho is my favourite, I love the deadpan snarkiness.

I did this too not so long ago! I'd never seen it before but really enjoyed it. I like this type of series - Elementary, Blacklist, Bones were favourites of mine.

I'm watching "The Shield" now. Rather different, but very good.

QueefofSheena · 06/09/2023 11:41

YY to Cho. There's a senior officer called Osvaldo Ardiles, one of the writers must have supported Spurs 😁

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 11/09/2023 09:43

I'm half way through season 4 now, the waistlines on the women's trousers are getting marginally higher and we are back to the most well-known guest actor being the murderer.

Watched nearly every episode except a few of the very last ( short ) series.
As pp mention a brilliant bit of escapism and that Patrick Jane made no bones about his talents being a learned skill rather than actual woo was an interesting touch too.
Malcolm McDowell featured as a cult leader for a couple of series too.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/09/2023 16:34

Wasn't O'Loughlin's first name Craig as well? I thought he was called Greg for a very long time.

Perception (paranoid schizophrenic neuroscience professor helps the FBI) feels like it's trying to be similar, but it isn't as good.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 11/09/2023 16:38

It’s my favourite TV series of all time. The chemistry between the main actors is perfect, and Cho is one of my favourite characters ever created for the small screen. A work of genius.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 11/09/2023 16:47

Yes, the American accent has a tough time with Craig O'Loughlin, it definitely sounds like Crag O'Lofflin.

I treat rewatched them all last year whilst recovering g from an op - they are fab - agree re Kimball.

Had forgotten the last series how lovely the Jane / Lisbon situation was (not saying too much in case anyone on here hasn't seen them all)

Had completely forgotten that Pedro Pascal was in it as Lisbons boyfriend at one stage .
Love love love it

BeyondMyWits · 12/09/2023 20:46

The mentalist was our second boxed set of lockdown. Love this sort of long thriller of a series, with a little humour and love interest.

Bones, Elementary, House, now on Castle.

Oblomov23 · 12/09/2023 20:57

I might join you. Used to love it him.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/09/2023 19:47

I'm mid-way through season five, the actress playing van Pelt is clearly very pregnant as all of her acting is done from the shoulders up or behind a computer screen and in this episode from behind a trolley piled with boxes. Grin

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 17/09/2023 20:42

I remember that 😂 It was like watching that series of Friends where Courtney Cox was so clearly pregnant when Monica and Chandler couldn’t get pregnant 😬

OneFrenchEgg · 17/09/2023 20:47

I loved it until I thought that was a resolution and it continued. I was so annoyed at the actual ending.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/09/2023 21:17

So there's a party to celebrate 10 years of Lisbon being in the department and poor van Pelt is stuck behind the bar (why?) at least 10m away from the camera in the baggiest t-shirt you've ever seen. Grin

OP posts:
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/09/2023 22:08

Oooh, very conveniently van Pelt is now going on an external training program for a month.

Ha, yeah, and Amanda Righetti was one of those women who just get big ALL over in pregnancy - arms, boobs, face. It was obvious just from her face.
