Apologies if anyone's posted this already but this was on the telly tonight and honestly it's just too good not to share

It was fabulous, loved seeing all the 60 somethings dancing! ( almost one myself and had a little dance in my living room).

Northernsouloldies · 26/08/2023 22:42

As far as Northern soul on TV goes it wasn't perfect (TV researchers are lazy when it comes to nsoul history and records) but on the whole wasn't half bad and I'm a hard to please soulie. 😁

Northernsouloldies · 26/08/2023 22:50

Have a listen to these if you enjoyed tonight's programme.
My heart needs a break.. Linda Jones.
Cause your mine... The vibrations.
Countdown here I come... The tempos. 😁.

Looking forward to catching up with this! I heard the full prom on BBC Sounds, which I believe includes more music than the TV version. I absolutely loved it.

AutumnCrow · 27/08/2023 18:37

It was bloody brilliant. Seriously joyous stuff.

Lalgarh · 28/08/2023 08:45

Quick plug for Maconie's Freak Zone show on Sunday nights 6 Music. The wildest strangest stuff you'll hear nowadays

Bunionbabe · 28/08/2023 08:48

The film Northern Soul is currently on iPlayer. Really worth a watch.

PuppyMonkey · 28/08/2023 08:51

I downloaded a northern soul playlist on Spotify after watching this, wish I could have gone it looked such a good night.

BellaBellla · 28/08/2023 09:33

@Lalgarh Favourite radio show 😊

About 10 years ago Paul Mason did a great Culture Show doc on Northern Soul, worth hunting down.

Caught the last few minutes of this, went to look for it on iPlayer and I was too early, so got lured back down this rabbit hole from last year.

couldn’t find a direct link, but it was still on iPlayer.

I don't know much about the music, but I was watching a comedy drama ( I think it was called ' the other one ?') where the main characters went to a northern soul night and dressed up etc and I thought it was nice to see something different to women going to a 70s night dancing to Abba. It did look fun

ethelredonagoodday · 28/08/2023 17:55

Just watched it. Absolutely brilliant!

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 28/08/2023 18:01

Stuart Maconie has always written about Northern Soul which was his first love as far as music goes.

I love every word he writes, and says. National Treasure he should be. ❤️

EnragedCatOwner · 28/08/2023 18:09

I wrote Stuart Maconie an email recently about an episode of the Freak Zone that I loved and he wrote me the sweetest reply. He is one of the few celebrities that I would be absolutely gutted to find out was a twat (and in fact I wouldn’t believe it)

I'd have trouble believing that one too!

@TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon Definitely a national treasure.

He just seems so humble and unassuming and I love the way he shares his love and knowledge of music, not in a show-offy way but more that he just want's everyone to experience the same joy from it that he does.

Definitely not representative of a Northern soul night, this is why those of us that are or were part of the nsoul scene wish tv would leave it alone cos its never done properly.

Me neither. I absolutely adore him. ❤️

Tiespin · 29/08/2023 19:46

@Bunionbabe I love that film

duc748 · 30/08/2023 02:10

I do too. I remember there's another film on the same topic; I always kinda bracketed the two together; imdb tells me it's Soulboy, with Martin Compston. But SB is the better of the two, I think. Anyway, thanks for the heads-up on this link! 😀

Northernsouloldies · 30/08/2023 05:31

Have to disagree with that, Northern soul was written by Elaine Constantine who was part of the nsoul scene and her film not only showcased the dancing and the music but also the darker side of the scene which did exist. All nighters in the 70s and 80s were not for the fainthearted at times they were populated by some scary people.

BellaBellla · 30/08/2023 07:32

@duc748 I enjoyed SB too.

@Northernsouloldies OK we get it, you went to NS nights. Maybe step back from this thread and stop patronising everyone that makes a contribution. As a former mod I have a huge collection of NS records but sorry for not being authentic, I was too busy playing with fisher price toys to be able to go to real northern soul nights.

Wow ats one nippy attitude. Its an open forum and if I want to express opinions on the nsoul scene I fucking well will. Don't bother replying because I won't dignify with a response.

duc748 · 30/08/2023 10:48

Actually FWIW, reading back, I got my initials mixed up last night. It's Northern Soul that I preferred of the two (largely cos I don't like Martin Compston much), but both are worth watching.

Tiespin · 30/08/2023 11:06

I think there needs to be a thread in appreciation of Mods and music. My friends and I still go to mod nights and love the music.
