I just watched this after a recommendation from here.

I watched all 13 episodes. I hated it, lol. Every single person so fucking unlikable. The main people so 'wet' and spineless.

It has similar energy to Upstairs Downstairs (original). But whereas in UD the characters are nuanced and sympathetic, in Flambards they are just annoying, and whenever one died I was glad.

I think the only one I liked was the German.

OMG....literally no-one I know ever heard of this bar my Mam. Not sure I'd like it now but I loved it then.

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2023 16:38

Is it the old 70s show ? Or a remake?
I was a little bit in love with the Will actor in the old one, but I was only ten or twelve or something back then ! He seemed nicer than the others to the main woman in it

The 70s one. Yes, he wasn't as horrible, but still quite pathetic.

I loved Flambards when it came out.
Adored the books as well - the characters were more rounded and nuanced.

I'm not sure how it would hold up to viewing nowadays

olderbutwiser · 25/08/2023 16:46

I read the books, I suspect they haven't aged well!

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2023 16:47

Will was poorly wasn't he?
Bedridden ?
I also read the books too , I was a bit obsessed by it as a youngster !

LaMadameCholet · 25/08/2023 16:47

Where is the available to stream/watch please? I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it, but I’m pretty sure my Mum will love it!

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2023 16:49

It did educate me a bit about flying and who made the first flying machines though !

I watched it on YouTube

I loved it as a pony mad teen just getting hormones. I had a bit of a crush on all 3 men.

Watched it again a few years ago, still enjoyed it, but the men...yuk. Oh Christina, there's a whole world of men out there.

I like the whistling theme tune.

I suspect it was a poor adaptation. The characters were all very two dimensional.

Oh gosh I was obsessed with the books as a child. Personally I fell in love with Sweetbriar the pony and Dick the groom. But then I was very disappointed when I watched the tv series because Dick wasn’t at all as I had imagined him. 😀

Why didn't they just sell sweetbriar after it came out that they hadn't fed him to the dogs.

"Poor Dick, his mother in the workhouse, boo, hoo. And I don't have any money to give him. Anyway, the rich plane guy can keep the horse for free."

I can't remember any of the story lines, but she liked horses and Will was obsessed with planes

JanglyBeads · 25/08/2023 18:43

Oh I was obsessed with the books too. Linda Newbury has written a sequel, which I have but haven't read yet.

Was utterly in love with Will in the books and the series ......

I loved the books as a teen but I re-read the first one as an experiment a few years back and absolutely hated it. Do not recommend, leave it in your past

imjustanerd · 25/08/2023 19:00

I thought everyone was talking about Flambards the theme park in Cornwall 😂 I'll slope off now

Wishimaywishimight · 25/08/2023 19:13

I knew I had the book somewhere!

NotSoLittle · 25/08/2023 20:05

I remember loving both the series & the books - probably helped I had a thing for both horses & planes & no access to either!
Anyone remember "A Horseman Riding By" with Nigel Havers. I enjoyed that too - I think I was older when I saw it. I read the books later (there's a whole series of them) by R. F. Delderfield and enjoyed them too.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/08/2023 20:10

I loved the books as a child. The series came out when I was mid teens so I'd sort of outgrown them by then.

I was in love with Will.

Cornishmumofone · 25/08/2023 20:15

@imjustanerd I thought the same as you!

BeginningToLookALotLike · 25/08/2023 20:27

I still remember the theme tune, very distinctive!

Pebble21uk · 25/08/2023 20:49

I loved the books and the TV version as a child in the 70s. Then in the 90s I met K.M Peyton in a professional capacity. She was a formidable woman in a very 'no nonsense' kind of way. I liked her! I just Googled her and she's still alive...now aged 94!

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/08/2023 20:51

I may be on YouTube tomorrow, I loved this. Very much expecting to feel it hasn't aged well.

Upstairs Downstairs was very re-watchable. This, not so much.
