Queen Charlotte: a Bridgerton Story
Versailles
The Great
Harlots
Marie Antoinette

minipie · 10/08/2023 22:24

How about

The Empress (Netflix)
Versailles (BBC)
The English Game (Netflix)

Orders76 · 10/08/2023 22:28

Thank you so much, I think I've also watched the empress about the romanoffs? So sad.
The others I'll be investigating, please keep them coming as outlander will be over soon!

Atlantic Crossing
War and Peace
Tenko
The Other Bolyen Girl

Not necessarily recommendations but are all available on UKTV https://uktvplay.co.uk/shows/atlantic-crossing/watch-online They may have others. Quite a lot of period dramas.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 11/08/2023 00:37

Another vote for Atlantic Crossing.

IwantToRetire · 11/08/2023 00:41

The King's Choice is a better film about the Norwegian royal family than Atlantic Crossing and seems to be available on some streaming services.

Becoming Elizabeth was on Lionsgate and I think now on one the the main UK channels. I couldn't get into it, but might appeal!

Have just seen OP has mentioned Downton Abbey. Lots of period dramas on UK tv. Cranford and so on.

Strugglingtofindclothes · 11/08/2023 15:17

Ripper Street
The Alienist
Outlander

IwantToRetire · 11/08/2023 16:21

2 Civil War dramas

The Devil's Whore still seems to be available on My 4.

Another on called By the Sword Divided but have no memory of that one!

I was looking for a more recent one where the lead actor was a descendant of the main character. But cant remember the name of the actor nor the tv series.

Banished - penal colony in Australia 18th(?) century

Jamestown - English colonising America

Magnificent Century on YouTube (be warned it’s 139 episodes)

It’s a Turkish drama dealing with the same time period as the Tudors, but with Sulieman. If you liked the Tudors you’ll like this.

Gunpowder? Kit Harrington is a descendant of Robert Catesby

Yes - that's it!

eleanorwish · 11/08/2023 18:47

I remember By the Sword Divided! It was in the 80s and the female lead was played the woman from the Gold Blend advert!

Anyone mentioned Poldark?
Also if you don't mind a bit of gore and a lot of historical inaccuracy Vikings or The Last Kingdom

IwantToRetire · 11/08/2023 19:13

A bit of a swerve but as suggestions have included not just history but historical dramas I was thinking of all the Catherine Cookson dramas.

They cover of period of (I think) late 19th and early 20th century.

And reflect how life (in the NE) was lived during those times. Many of the these are surprising contemporary in terms of demands made on women by family and society but full of historical references.

They look quite dated, but are also interesting because they were made at a time closer to the period being shown and include details that those making a series now would probably have no idea about.

I only discoverd these by stumbling on them on saturday afternoons and think they are still available on UKTV. They are listed as one episode, but each is in fact 4 or 5 episodes from one series shown as a long single film.

Also interesting for spotting now well known stars in early roles!

LibertyLily · 15/08/2023 14:49

I'm loving Becoming Elizabeth and am so disappointed it got cancelled after the first season.

Also The Borgias is one of my favourite period drama series (not sure if it's available anywhere, we have it on dvd).....

eleanorwish · 16/08/2023 08:12

Just thought of another one, The Gilded Age - Downton in New York

Strugglingtofindclothes · 16/08/2023 08:45

Medici
The Last Kingdom (this is amazing!)
If you can find it the BBC did a fantastic Casanova with David Tennant years ago, I think it was a Russell T Davis type affair if you want any indication of its madness!

Twizbe · 16/08/2023 09:25

UK TV has House of Elliot at the moment. I’m enjoying a re watch of that.

IwantToRetire · 16/08/2023 16:30

Not sure what it will be like to watch now but BBC is proudly announcing it is reshowing I, Claudius!!
