Yellowstone on My5 - confused

I have started watching Yellowstone on My5. I've only seen the first episode and really want to like it and carry on but I'm already confused! Can anyone outline the story without spoilers for future episodes? For example, who is the (banker?) woman? How many sons does the Kevin Costner character have? Is one of them the chap living in the trailer and if so why can't he see his grandson? What was the significance of the crash at the beginning? What are the First Nation people upset about?

So many questions not helped by the fact that the subtitles are shite, not in sync with the video and miss out great chunks of dialogue.

Tell me it's worth sticking with!

I am glad it is not just me! Yes the plot is a bit hard to follow. We recently started watching too (on Paramount plus) and we're getting near the end of the first series. I am hoping it will sink in gradually! There is some good acting, lots of action and it's reasonably enjoyable.

It seems to get rave reviews in the USA - I think maybe partly because the whole cowboy thing is such a strong part of their national identity. The writers assume that viewers will be familiar with a lot of this stuff - like land rights, relationships with the native American community etc, but of course as Brits we are not. Will have to Google more.

Banker woman is the Kevin Costner character's (only?) daughter Beth. He seems to have 3 sons, one of whom is killed in the first episode. One son, Jamie I think, lives in the trailer (not sure why as his dad is rich) with his native American wife and the grandson. We see John Dutton (Costner) taking care of the grandson in future episodes, I must have missed where he wasn't allowed to see him. The third son (forget the name) is a lawyer.

I am starting to enjoy it more and it seems to be falling into place a bit, but I do think that the writers could have made it a lot clearer. Still some things I don't get though, like why the daughter is so messed up, I think it has something to do with the death of her mother when she was still a child.

We are supposed to be rooting for this family (or are we?) but they are power grabbing and unnecessarily violent. It's a bit like a cowboy/Western version of The Sopranos I suppose, but lacking the humour. I will persevere though.

Watched the first episode last night And not sure I'll carry on. Definitely not worth the hype so far.

The first episode of the first series is confusing but it gets better. I watched on Paramount with the subtitles on. Series 2 is very good. It's 1 of the biggest shows in America and the scenery is stunning, for a while last year I was desperate to go to Montana.
Unfortunately Taylor Sheridan who creates the show has fallen out with Kevin Costner and currently it stops mid series 5.
There is also 1883 and 1923 which covers the Dutton back story when you are ready for more (on Paramount Plus).

Also the actress who plays Beth grew up in the U.K. in Surrey.

tennissquare · 29/07/2023 15:54

Beth's childhood story line plays out in series 2 and 3, it's worth persevering with.

unsync · 29/07/2023 16:40

It all gets explained as the episodes run through.

It’s some years since I watched the first season but it’s absolutely amazing show. Stick with it.

so three sons in the beginning, one dies. Two sons and a daughter left. I think it was Kayce not Jamie that lived in the trailer? Kayce and his wife had a bit of a rocky patch and at some point she was threatening to not let him see Tate. His wife had some misgivings about the family dynamics and I think Kayce was drinking?

I don’t remember a crash. Not sure about the First Nations people being upset but there’s a long term story about the land in the valley being developed for tourism and some friction due to this so it may be to do with that?

Yellowstone is brilliant! And worth persevering with. The spin offs were good too.

squashyhat · 29/07/2023 21:32

Thanks all. I thought I replied earlier but the post seems to have gone missing. I will persevere.

💯 keep going. By the end of the available episodes I was Googling ranches for sale in Montana and having VERY vivid Rip-based dreams 😂

LizaTarbuckForQueen · 29/07/2023 21:35

It’s ‘Dallas’ for a modern Republican audience (which I am not) and Beth Dutton is a goddess JR.

It’s ACE.

fireflyloo · 29/07/2023 21:40

It's an amazing series. Up there as one of the best. The first episode is a bit meh but it gets better.

isthismylifenow · 29/07/2023 21:41

I finished season 5 this evening.

You need to stick with it. I was also not sure after watching eps 1, and it's a double episode so long.

I saw online there are 14 episodes of season 5, but only 8 are available to watch. If anyone else has seen it all, how many episodes have you been able to view?

Netaporter · 29/07/2023 21:48

@isthismylifenow there is another Yellowstone thread which I posted on. There is an issue with Taylor Sheridan wanting to write everything at his own pace and Kevin Costner’s availability. So no eps for the remainder of S5 have been filmed yet but are due for release in Nov…..Apparently, KC was available for the dates agreed but TS wasn’t ready with the scripts. KC has another cowboy passion project he is self-financing (sounds a bit Waterworld 2.0) and has been clear that he was available on the contracted dates and is not prepared to reschedule… as a result plenty of rumours abound that John Dutton could be killed off 😱

midsomermurderess · 30/07/2023 21:33

You can find a, probably several, wiki pages which give you the background of the various characters. I found it useful but, as said above, their stories will be revealed.

It is Dallas, isn’t it: more sex, more violence, but a Montana/cattle Dallas.

rickandmorts · 30/07/2023 21:39

It's sooo good. You get to know the characters and who's who. Just don't do what my mum did and watch Season 2 Episode 1 and then complained she had no idea what was going on. Because she'd missed a whole fucking season 😂

reducemug · 31/07/2023 06:56

I remember ep 1 of season 1 being about an hour and a half long. I don't think its helped that C5 have loads of ads and only one hour on a Friday. I also remember the first episode being hard going but really persevere. Its brilliant.

Then, when you are hooked and start to watch 1883 and 1923 you will find yourself googling the Dutton Family tree for help!

I am watching again. I am watching with subtitles on as i am finding the sound really bad. Not sure if thats my TV or C5. I always found subtitles good with Line of Duty.

reducemug · 31/07/2023 06:59

Over the episodes it becomes clear why the kids are like they are, especially Beth.
