13 Reasons Why

Watching the first series of this for the second time (watched it when it first came out which was probably about 6 or 7 years ago now I guess).

I don't know why, I'm just finding it really annoying this time around. Like it is glamorising suicide. A lot of the things that happen to Hannah are horrible yes, but pretty typical of high school. I know things take a much darker turn towards the end but at the minute it's just fall outs, boyfriend issues and other teenage girl drama.

I don't know. I feel like it kind of gives the message that suicide is a normal reaction to this sort of very common teenage behaviour. Hannah is a drama queen and very self centred. She's also horrible to Clay. The way the tapes come across is poetic, dramatic, something that could be admired by teenagers. It gives a really dodgy message I think.

Anyone else have any opinions on it?

i watched it and got very fed up by the end of the whole thing.

I just feel it’s very “look what you made me do”.
Its very sad and I’m sure a lot of kids/adolescents can relate.
but at the same time, I think it just shows how many lives are ripped apart by suicide. I’m not sure I could watch it again at all tbh.

That's exactly it. It's all about blame. And yes the kids were cruel and by the end it did get very dark but before that point it's all just typical teenage dramas. Blaming someone for your suicide because they published a poem for example.

The character of Hannah isn't particularly likeable. But that isn't the point. For me it glamourises suicide in a really worrying way. The first time I watched it I was younger and was engrossed in the story, this time I can see how annoying and problematic it is. I don't think I'd be happy for my dc who are approaching high school age to watch it.

I felt exactly like this when I watched it and only managed half for this reason. When I clicked on this thread I was hoping this was the vibe.
It just feels like it was actually written by a dramatic teenager who is fantasising about ending their life and all the people who will be 'so sorry' for how they treated them etc. like you say it's awful to think of teenagers going through quite normal teenage stuff and then watching this thinking this is the way to react :-( sends a really bad message

I haven't watched it since it was released so maybe I'm mis-remembering but didn't all the little things that happen build up to Bryce raping her? And she killed herself after that?

jennyfromthefarm · 31/07/2023 14:06

I think the little things probably did build up to the horrendous rape scene but the whole premise is that she's naming each person and each tape/story as a 'reason why'. So she's essentially saying that it's because of all of them. That's how I took it anyway.

It's awful and should be banned!! It's totally glamorising suicide for teenagers. I would never let a teen watch this
