Absolutely loved this WWII series.
Season 1 was 4 years ago, I'd given up hoping for season 2. Going to re-watch season 1 which is being repeated on iPlayer.

Thanks for posting this, it was a brilliant series and they left it on such a cliff hanger with the pregnancy etc. I thought it must have been dropped.

secretgirl · 01/07/2023 19:21

I looked this up recently and series 2 is out in October.

Lavenderu · 01/07/2023 21:30

Season 2 starting 16th July.
Just watched ep 1 S1 again, I'd forgotten Sean Bean and Lesley Manville were in it.

Ooh, thanks for posting, I’ll watch the first season now.

EarringsandLipstick · 01/07/2023 21:40

Oh brilliant! I didn't realise it was coming up. Like PP, I assumed it had been cancelled which was so disappointing as the acting was great. I loved Sean Bean in it!

Lavenderu · 02/07/2023 11:17

@EarringsandLipstick yes, Sean Bean playing a very different role for him.

This Sunday

General Placemark

User10486743 · 14/07/2023 19:31

I haven't seen the first series, just watching now, on episode 3 so should be ready for new series on Sunday

Lavenderu · 14/07/2023 21:57

I'm on ep 6 of S1. It's as good as I remembered, have a terrible memory so I can't recall the plot. Lois is brilliant, haven’t seen the actress in anything else
Sean Bean is terrific and that odd relationship with Lesley Manville.

Bizarrely I am also watching The Cazalets, another period drama set around 1940 with Lesley Manville but made about 25 years ago. Keep getting the two mixed up.

I watched The Cazalets again recently. It was really good and such a great cast. It's a shame they didn't make any further series because there were a fair few Cazalet novels.

I'm looking forward to seeing this new series of World on Fire after such a long break. The writer is ambitious tackling the era in this way - with so many theatres of war it must be daunting trying to decide what aspects to cover. Apparently, he still has plans to make seven series, so he can take the characters through the whole war. Not sure the BBC would necessarily sign up for that, but you never know. I enjoyed the first series, historical flaws and all, so hope this one is as entertaining.

Lavenderu · 15/07/2023 16:17

I am definitely going to read the Cazalet books.
I wonder why it took 4 years to make season 2? I assumed it had been dropped as it wasn't the award winner I thought it deserved to be.

I think they ran into problems filming consequent series due to Covid restrictions and I presume the actors then had other commitments. I'm so excited it's coming back.

bizzey · 15/07/2023 17:27

So looking forward to it !

I hope it will still flow even though I don't have time to re-watch the 1st series .

StarShapedWindow · 15/07/2023 21:03

I loved the Cazalet books, I read them as a teenager and then again in my 30’s. I’m in my 40’s now so might read again. Does anyone who’s read the series have any idea why the very final book (written quite a long time after the rest of the series) was so very sad and depressing? Do you think Elizabeth Jane Howard became depressed in old age?

Lavenderu · 15/07/2023 22:09

Just watched the final episode of s1. I'd forgotten it finished on such a cliffhanger with Harry and Katya

I don't know how I missed this the first time round, finished the first series yesterday and now I see the whole lot of second series is on iPlayer, I don't think I can wait to watch it weekly😁

Lavenderu · 16/07/2023 12:25

@User10486743 I am like one of those children who has Easter eggs left in July. I will watch it very slowly over many weeks 😁

So what do you all think?

User10486743 · 16/07/2023 21:57

I liked it but a bit sad Sean Bean isn't in it now, I'm on episode 4 now so I'm keeping shtum

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/07/2023 22:02

How are they covering the lack of Sean Bean and Arthur Darvill?

I will probably binge this

CountFoscoHasMiceInHisPocket · 16/07/2023 22:06

I'd never heard of this show and now realise there's a full series I've missed! Will go back and watch.

The creepy Lebensborn programme reminds me of modern day Taliban, convincing teen girls it's a great honour to reproduce with random soldiers for the cause.

Philandbill · 16/07/2023 22:07

Sean Bean character has died in a bomb landing on his house. No sign of Helen Hunt's character or of the doctor in Paris. Determined not to binge this, it's going to be my Sunday evening treat over the summer 😃

Clawdy · 16/07/2023 22:20

Enjoyed it, some good acting, especially the young impressionable German girl. Wish I could remember more about the first series though!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/07/2023 22:21

I may need to rewatch series 1

Prescottdanni123 · 16/07/2023 22:22

Covid would have stalled it for at least two years. And then they had to get the cast back together (and maybe tried to convince Sean Bean to do season 2) and then I imagine it took a while to film.

I really enjoyed it. Because its been so long, they kind of had to set the scene again but I love the fact they cover lesser known aspects of the war.
