Just saw an ad for this. Can’t find a thread so here’s goes

Right up my street - based on true life events - I have high hopes for this like steel murders

again another good cast !! JJ , Christian and Alex !!

It started June 20th so e3 is on Monday 11pm

not sure how missed it the other week

You may binge 1&2 as I will be to catch up 😂

The eight-part drama stars Joshua Jackson (https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/sep/05/joshua-jackson-interview-dr-death-dawsons-creek) as the Dallas spinal surgeon who was more butcher than doctor, and whose appalling lack of skill l
eft a trail of patients permanently disabled, and two of them dead. He was imprisoned for life in 2017.

This limited series is inspired by the Wondery podcast of the same name (https://wondery.com/shows/dr-death/) and tackles the story of disgraced Dr. Christoph Duntsch, a real surgeon who was sentenced to life in prison in 2017 (https://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?awinmid=11005&awinaffid=103504&clickref=whattowatch-gb-1092178216230364300&p=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.sky.com%2Fstory%2Fchristian-slater-dr-death-star-on-the-real-life-horror-story-of-former-neurosurgeon-christopher-duntsch-12396806) after a series of botched surgeries.

The series follows Duntsch, who is described as a 'young, charismatic and ostensibly brilliant' surgeon. However, as patients who enter his operating theater begin leaving either maimed or dead, two fellow physicians (along with a Dallas-based prosecutor) team up to stop him from harming any more people.

Canadian actor Joshua Jackson leads the Dr. Death cast as Dr. Christopher Duntsch. You may know Jackson from The Affair, Fringe, Little Fires Everywhere, or, most recently, the Paramount Plus (https://www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/paramount-plus-price-cost-deals-and-discounts-for-the-streaming-service)Fatal Attraction (https://www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/fatal-attraction-on-paramount-plus-release-date-cast-plot-and-all-about-the-tv-series) serie
s.

The series also stars Christian Slater Dr. Randall Kirby and Alex Baldwin as Dr. Robert Henderson, the two physicians who catch on to Duntsch's scheme and set out to stop him, aided by Dallas-based prosecutor, Michelle Shughart (AnnaStophia Robb).

Dr. Death

We’re at our most vulnerable when we go to our doctors. We trust the person at the other end of that scalpel. We trust the hospital. We trust the system.

I also really don't like the way the series portrayed Jerry Summers and Dr Kirk. Jerry Summers is portrayed as some kind of joke figure in the series whereas he was actually a very well-spoken intelligent guy from his interviews. Dr Kirk also wasn't some kind of joke and comes across completely differently in the documentary.

Just returned from hols so have lots of catching up to do! Going to watch episode 1 tonight. Although reading your posts I’m not sure if I should skip it and go straight the documentary suggested by @XelaM

I watched the first two back to back. Really good. Awful to think what he was allowed to do. Got really frustrated looking for somewhere free to watch the rest. Will have to wait til it’s dropped weekly

There is a free 7-day trial on Prime so you can watch the show and then cancel. But I recommend also watching the documentary with the free trial

Mmm. I’ve now watched 1 & 2. It’s not great despite being an horrendous ‘story’. Think I’ll watch the documentary though.

NotDonna · 03/07/2023 22:35

If I get the 7 day free trial of Lionsgate to watch the documentary is there anything else worthwhile seeing whilst I have the free trial please?

I'm struggling with it

It's truly frightening and inexplicable as to why he actually did it. He was by all accounts very smart, a star student, very competent during his residency years. So he knew exactly what he was doing but did it anyway? Or was it mental illness or the drugs? Dr Henderson even checked that he wasn't an imposter because his surgeries were so diabolical. I don't think Duntsch ever explained why he did it.

As for the series, I don't understand why they couldn't just do the series in chronological order like the documentary?! It doesn't make any sense and you get completely confused with when each of the surgeries were performed and where. It's like they cut up the timeline in the editing room and completely muddled it up to cause maximum confusion. Why?! The documentary was very clear and much more compelling and terrifying!

XelaM · 04/07/2023 13:37

I also found the series misrepresented some of the characters. Jerry Summers, Dr Kirk and Duntsch's parents are portrayed very differently in the series than they come across in the documentary (in a negative way) whereas the series puts a much more favourable spin on the nurse Kimbley and I found she came across quite badly in the documentary.

lazymum99 · 17/08/2023 10:51

Did no one else finish this. I thought it was good. No one seems to have found out why he did this. Although a friend from med school seems to imply that he was brilliant at research but should never have been a surgeon.
The statement that are written at the end were truly scary saying that this would almost certainly happen again and may be happening somewhere else in the USA now

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/08/2023 19:44

Sorry no. I gave up. Which I. Unlike me but couldn't get on with it

Is it poor Jerry Summers who said it? The documentary about "Dr Death" was very good. And Jerry Summers was actually very well-spoken and cane across very well considering what this monster did to him. I hated how the series portrayed him.
