I haven't seen anything of the first series at all. i picked up on the second series and have been hooked ever since.
i don't think missing the fist series has made any difference though as nobody seems to know what's going on anyway.

Not sure why he doesn't want to see him. somebody posted a possible reason before. something about guilt as to why aaron is home and not claire possibly????
