Rewatching Wolf Hall

Sorry, I know this is so old! I watched it first in the pandemic and I don't think I appreciated Mark Rylance's incredibly expressive face as Cromwell, Mark Gatiss's sourpuss act as Gardiner, Claire Foy's hauteur as Anne.... all of it is so good. So subtle, just like the book. No hamming.

Glad you are enjoying it.
Mark Rylance make Cromwell quite alluring, I think.

I've watched it all at least 3 times and might do so again while it's on iPlayer.
Do you think that they will make a series to portray The Mirror and the Light?

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 22/06/2023 22:25

Hmm I think I need to watch it again, it's so good.

I have the books but struggle to find the time to read them

JayAlfredPrufrock · 22/06/2023 22:27

Was only thinking this morning that I should rewatch.

BansheeofInisherin · 23/06/2023 15:11

@rosegoldwatcher I wish they would adapt both Bring Up the Bodies and The Mirror and the Light. 6 episodes is not enough and doesn't complete the story.

I have read the books as well and they are fantastic, but not for everyone perhaps as written in quite an opaque way. ( third person third person, I think it's called).

I had a massage crush on Mark Rylance after watching Wolf Hall. Sensational drama. Watched it twice already and definitely due a rewatch

MissMarplesNiece · 23/06/2023 15:44

I developed a massive crush on Mark Rylance when I watched Wolf Hall 🙂. He's excellent in the film Bridge of Spies. I'm hoping to get tickets to see him "live" in Dr Semmelweis at the National Theatre later in the summer.

Ormally · 23/06/2023 16:08

Oh yes. Looking forward to the sequel.

But if you haven't seen the scenes in 'Upstart Crow' where "the actor, Wolf Hall" auditions in front of Shakespeare's troupe, who are looking for an actor who can SHOUT and STRUT, then it's probably a few keystrokes away on Youtube...

Did you ever see him in Jerusalem? He was out of this world. One of the best stage performances ever.

shropshirewitch · 23/06/2023 16:22

The scenes between Cromwell and Mary Boleyn are some of the best bits on TV. "She lets him pull down her shift and kiss her breasts." "Good man if he can find them." I was rooting for them to get together, the actors' chemistry is incredible.

GremlinDolphin4 · 23/06/2023 16:40

I love Mark Rylance! His Cromwell was amazing and Jerusalem was outstanding. Good to hear there’s more Cromwell to follow. I must watch bridge of spies!

3kidsaremorethanenough · 23/06/2023 16:53

Absolutely love Wolf Hall, always watch it October time so i can light the candles and pretend I'm just behind Cromwell 😁😁I think my crush on MR was hearing him as Flopp in Bing 😳that voice!

I think he delivers the dry wit so we'll, the way Hilary Mantel had written it, they stay so faithful to the dialogue of the books.

The Mirror and the Light is commissioned don't know when it's going to be made though. Damian Lewis as Henry and Bernard Hill as 'Uncle Norfolk' brilliant casting. "By the shitting shroud of christ" Cromwells face at hearing it is just brilliant.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 23/06/2023 16:58

Going against the tide... I absolutely loathed Mark Rylance as Cromwell and therefore couldn't watch the TV programme for long once i realised that.

I loved the books and the plays.

BansheeofInisherin · 23/06/2023 17:04

Am so glad I posted. I thought I was weird finding Mark Rylance attractive- DH thinks I should have a crush on boring Brad Pitt! Something about the way he delivers his lines. Happy to meet my fellow nerds! Yes @shropshirewitch he and the actress playing Mary Boleyn were delicious together.

So glad that there is a sequel too!

I plan to go see "Semmelweiss". I missed "Jerusalem".

I must try and watch this!! I know it's history- lite but James Frain as Cromwell in The Tudors (and as The King Maker in the White Queen) is my total crush. Never liked him in anything else as too thin for me but the outfits hide that in historical stuff .

BansheeofInisherin · 23/06/2023 17:07

I booked tickets to see "The Mirror and the Light" at the West End, but there was a tube strike on the day and I missed it.

What didn't you like about him @DisplayPurposesOnly ? I adored Bernard Hill as Norfolk too.

James Frain is hot as hell. I also watched The Tudors and The White Queen! Am a sucker for that period.

I thought he was wrong for 'wolf hall' but incredible in Jerusalem.
I also saw him as Olivia in 'Twelfth Night' and found it uncomfortable, I known it
Why! I loved another version of 'Twelfth Night' with Derek Jacobi, that was very funny.
I suppose it demonstrates how different he is in each role, you're always getting a new Rylance!

Neilsfavouritechilli · 23/06/2023 17:30

Me too @bansheeofinsherin obsessed with the tudor period and drive my husband batty with documentaries as I talk over them and fill in the gaps. I'd highly recommend Royal Bastards on the off chance you've not seen it. The narration, the acting #chefskiss

BansheeofInisherin · 23/06/2023 17:39

I have not seen Royal Bastards. But I am going to Hever Castle tomorrow to see Cromwell's newly discovered prayer book! ( also never been to Hever).

Yes, I drive my husband batty too, so going with a friend tomorrow. DH did take me to Thornbury Castle though last year to see where Henry spent a night.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 23/06/2023 17:50

So jealous @bansheeofinsherin Hever is on my list but it's going to warrant a weeks holiday to get down there. Seriously get the feel for Henry VII getting on the throne with the docu/drama I mentioned (it has Phillip Glenister in as one of the three narrators)

Neilsfavouritechilli · 23/06/2023 17:52

I also feel a bit insulted that Cromwells prayer book is at Hever, he helped bring Anne's downfall.

XVII · 23/06/2023 18:39

Mark Rylance is an astonishingly good actor.
fantastic series

midsomermurderess · 23/06/2023 18:41

Claire Foy is marvellous as Anne Boleyn. The last scenes, her terror, are unforgettable.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 23/06/2023 18:59

Seared into my brain.
