Steeltown Murders is an upcoming four-part BBC One drama - on Monday at 9pm for 4 weeks

it will be on iPlayer 🙄🙄🙄 so no bingers please with spoilers if you can’t hold restraint 😂😂

(https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_One) factual drama television miniseries written by Ed Whitmore (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Whitmore) and directed by Marc Evans (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Evans). Starring Philip Glenister (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Glenister) and Steffan Rhodri (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steffan_Rhodri)
as detectives investigating a set of murders in
Port Talbot (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Talbot) in
South Wales (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Wales)

. It is scheduled to premiere on 15 May 2023 on
BBC One (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_One)
, with all episodes immediately available on
BBC iPlayer (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_iPlayer)
.

A brand new Welsh-made, true crime drama is coming to BBC (https://www.walesonline.co.uk/all-about/bbc) One this May, Steeltown Murders. Set in both the 1970s and early 2000s, Steeltown Murders is an account of how three murders in south Wales were solved
almost 30 years after they had been committed.

The drama centres on the hunt to catch the killer of three young women in the Port Talbot (https://www.walesonline.co.uk/all-about/port-talbot) area and the remarkable story of how - in the first case of its kind - the mystery was solved almost 30 years later using pioneering DNA evidence.

In September 1973, teenage factory workers Geraldine Hughes and Pauline Floyd left the Top Rank nightclub in Swansea (https://www.walesonline.co.uk/all-about/swansea) together to try hitching a lift home.

But they'd never reach their destination. Instead their bodes were discovered the next day dumped in Neath Port Talbot (https://www.walesonline.co.uk/all-about/neath-port-talbot) woodland having been raped and strangled.

It was a hideous crime which left two families in mourning and an entire community in fear of where its perpetrator might strike next.

The resulting search for the culprit, Wales' very first documented serial killer (https://www.walesonline.co.uk/lifestyle/tv/bbc-dark-land-how-wales-22751647), ended up becoming one of the longest-running murder hunts in this country's history.

Indee d it would take 30 years before officers finally unmasked the a man who'd come to be known as
The Saturday Night Strangler (https://www.walesonline.co.uk/lifestyle/nostalgia/how-saturday-night-strangler-finally-15031305)

  • and whom, it was discovered, was responsible for a third death.

Starring Philip Glenister from Life on Mars as DCI Paul Bethell and Gavin & Stacey's Steffan Rhodri as Phil ‘Bach’ Rees, the story will follow two timelines, the early 1970s and early 2000s, and the younger versions of the detectives are played by Scott Arthur (Good Omens, Borg McEnroe) and Siôn Alun Davies (The Sandman, Hidden).
Also featuring in the cast are: Keith Allen, Priyanga Burford, Sharon Morgan, Nia Roberts, Amy Morgan, Matthew Gravelle, Gareth John Bale, Elinor Crawley, Kriss Dosanjh, Oliver Ryan and Dyfan Dwyfor.

I'm saving the documentary until after I've seen the whole series at TV pace. I'm not familiar with the true story, but it's already captured my attention. I've seen Steffan Rhodri on stage and he was very good. The nuances of accents haven't worried me as I'm not familiar with all the distinctions like locals are. I found scenes very moving indeed, particularly the young friend's face at the funeral. She had no lines then, but you could just read exactly what someone in her situation would be going through.

butterpuffed · 19/05/2023 13:18

I went into iPlayer on BBC and there's only episodes 2, 3 and 4 . I checked a different way via a google link for episode 1 and it went on to the BBC main page and said episode 1 not available . Grrrrrr .

StarbucksSmarterSister · 19/05/2023 15:13

Bizarre. Mine also has no ep 1 but 2 and 3 "available for 11 months", ep 4 "available for 29 days".

Must be a glitch. Try again tomorrow.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 19/05/2023 15:17

i need to rewatch when I haven’t had a drink, good but very confused with the time line jumping

Stillhatemondays · 19/05/2023 18:01

There must be an iplayer issue with this - I watched ep1 last night but it was the audio commentary version and I couldn’t find any way of switching it off!

Emotionalsupportviper · 19/05/2023 18:48

I fell off the wagon and watched the lot.

Then I watched the documentary.

My lips are sealed except to say it's worth watching.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/05/2023 18:52

Oh @Emotionalsupportviper

Shakes her head sadly

What happening to no bingeing

Happy valley you said you saw the error of your ways

Look - I fell off the wagon, OKAY?

I'm not proud of it. it started with Mr Viper saying "I'm watching the next one. I want to see it even if you don't" and me clashing furiously about in the kitchen because I couldn't watch and do my knitting (even though it makes my shoulder ache and no-one ever offers to rub Deep Heat into it, I have to ask) and then I gave in and started watching again.

I'm not proud of what I've done, but we all slide a bit sometimes and anyway I an GOING TO PUT THE FISH TO BED - their lights have been on too long today already. I don't have time for this!

<flounces out in guilty rage>

<knows am in the wrong>

<comes creeping back in>

<tiny voice> Sorry . . .

DunkingMyDonuts · 19/05/2023 22:23

Glad others were confused with the time line! I thought we were watching 2 different forces in 1973 which different rapes/ murders at the same time.

Couldnt understand why they had 2 characters called Paul...

I dont want to Google it as I dont know the end, but is it meant to be 2003? Looks really old fashioned if so, more like late 80s/ early 90s apart from the mobile phones

I just had a look on the i-player app on my TV (cos I was vaguely intending to catch up with this), and it's showing eps #1, 2, 3, & 4 now.

Thanks for that @duc748 😊

I think it's really good , the only confusion was flipping backwards and forwards so quickly and so often .

diddl · 20/05/2023 18:46

Only just seen this thread so settling down for Ep1.

Currently singing along to "Alright Now"!

They're a nightmare all day if they don't get a good 8 hours, Blondes.

Tantrums, sulking in the vallisneria, refusing to eat their daphnia - you wouldn't believe it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/05/2023 19:25

Sounds like mini blondes 😂😂

I liked this , I was around in the early 1970s and remember the dodgy wallpaper and green 'trim 'phones. Love seeing the old cars too.
It's a sad story though and even worse it's all true :(
The back and forth over the years did confuse me a bit at first , but once you get your head around it, it made sense. Plus they went back to the old police offices and the lights still worked. Surely old buildings like that wouldn't have working electricity like that would it ?.
Some of the accents are a bit suspect , but it's well acted and it's clever how they make places look older.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/05/2023 12:51

Have managed to download e2 so will watch that later

Those poor girls though :(
So sad

The 1970s were all brown like that but the music was FAB! We are going to finish it tonight and I have a number 1 suspect.
