Magpie Murders - BBC1 and iPlayer - binge watch thread ie with spoilers

Has anyone else binge watched this?

I have just finished and enjoyed the double story line and the actors/ess having two roles.

I think Anthony Horowitz is a very (bit too) clever writer, who nearly but doesn't usually tip over into smaltz. But paces story lines well with interesting twists and turns.

Maybe it did tip over in being a bit sugary at the end, but not as saccharine as Call the Midwife.

Lots of lovely scenery and clothes.

I notice it was a co production with Brit Box which might explain why episodes are only 45 minutes so that ad breaks can then be included.

I've only recently taken up binge watching as I realised I forget so much in the 7 days between schedule watching, that trying to remember everything means that I miss a lot in each following episode.

Anyone else started or finished binge watching?

ha ha - I did start when I read the first line, having forgotten my question.

Then I took a deep breath and thought of course.

Thank you

Oh thank you for the heads up. I knew it was due to be on soon...

I read the books some time ago...then the Hawthorn series (which would also make great TV), having read or listened to the Alex Riders with my daughter.

I started following AH on Twitter a few years back and I seem to remember that he got a bit of grief for letting the serialisation go to Britbox first (I think that has to be pre-covid?).

That man is a prolific writer!

I loved it! Agree really clever with the double storyline and the actors with two roles. The way they did it could have been confusing but it worked very well.

I even guessed the killer early on and I never guess these things.

Looking forward to the next one.

I’ve read the book and am half way through the series.
really enjoyed/enjoying both.

I liked the casting and think it’s been well adapted. I would recommend both book and tv series.

I loved how Susan knew people didn’t like her and that was okay; she gave as good as she got too.

midsomermurderess · 04/04/2023 21:28

I really enjoyed it. Great cast, lovely locations, clothes, very classy production. All round good fun with enough to keep you guessing. I hope they do an adaptation of Moonflower Murders which picks up with them having moved to Crete, but set mostly in Devon, if I remember correctly.

AuntieJoyce · 04/04/2023 21:51

Yes just binge watched all six. It’s funny I didn’t really enjoy the book that much. I liked moonflower murders much better but I really enjoyed this TV series.

He’s such a good writer, and it segued really well from one time period to another which can be a bit clunky sometimes. Great acting as well. Loved grumpy Conleth. Bit of a change from Game of Thrones.

I’ve never seen Atticus in anything I really enjoyed him too. Anyone see Anthony Horowitz going into the church?

Crumpetdisappointment · 06/04/2023 09:03

i finished this yesterday.
i enjoyed it
perhaps shouldnt have rushed through it.
it was different but not sure about the fire, at least she saved the final chapter, but i wonder would people have worked out the anagram
his name was always an anagram after all

I loved this. So clever. Lesley Manville is always brilliant, and I was pleased to see Matthew Beard too (Dr Max in "Vienna Blood").
And Suffolk looked beautiful.

diddl · 06/04/2023 17:47

Just watching the 2nd ep.

Claire Rushbrook as her sister again!

RuthTopp · 08/04/2023 22:04

Love the clothes Lesley Manville is wearing in this.
SHE IS 67 ! ! !

IwantToRetire · 08/04/2023 22:30

Claire Rushbrook as her sister again!

That's what I thought. She must cringe when she gets a call from her agent saying there's an offer of a new part - but it isn't really!

She looks fabulous doesn't she?

I don't know why but it always surprises me that she was married to Gary Oldman.

dcbc1234 · 19/04/2023 12:31

Just finished this this morning and I have to say, it was much better done than 'Why didn't they ask Evans?' which I also recently watched.

Mogginsthemog · 19/04/2023 13:44

I loved it. 1st episode seemed a bit slow, but picked up brilliantly from there. I read the book, previously but had forgotten much of the plot.

Agree re LMs clothes (the turtle neck jumper was Anthropologie).

Yes Auntie Joyce, I spotted Anthony Horowitz going up to the church.
