I’m very late to the party on this one, but having heard all the hype, started watching Succession yesterday (series 1). 2 episodes in, and Im struggling with it as I really dislike all the characters, and I find it really difficult to engage with a film or series if there’s no one I can root for 😂 without giving any spoilers, is it worth persevering or should I give up now? Thanks x

if you really need someone to root for then I think you may struggle! I think it is wonderful, but they are all, ALL, awful people!

Violetparis · 03/04/2023 08:03

I am the same, have watched the first 2 episodes and I can't see what the fuss is about, I thought I'd love it. Too much mumbling too. Think I'm only going to persevere with it as I've paid for the 1st series. Hopefully I will get more into it.

hugefanofcheese · 03/04/2023 08:09

I think great, very well acted and complex characters but no, I'm not sure you'll find anyone to like or cheer on! Possibly Tom or Greg to support the outsider in trying to beat the others at their own game but they're all completely self centred and manipulative.

IHateFlies · 03/04/2023 08:17

I started it a couple of years ago, felt same as you op and abandoned it. Picked it up again a few weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it this time. Maybe once you accept all the characters for what they are and realise you don't like any of them, you enjoy it from a total outsiders perspective.

They are all horrible, the thing that worked for me was I found myself looking forward to Tom & Greggs interactions, v funny as episodes move along. Don't try to like them, they are written to be horrible entitled UBER privileged. I now root for Logan as he was self made.

mondaytosunday · 03/04/2023 08:24

It's a 'love to hate' show. Just how awful and despicable can they be to each other on each show? I love the Gerri-Roman thing - he's such a creep but my favourite character!

Rose5678 · 03/04/2023 08:27

I felt exactly the same as you but now I absolutely love it! Definitely worth persevering

If you need nice characters to like to enjoy a show then Succession is not for you.

In Succession all the main characters are dislikable, but you (well i) find you switch which one you feel is justified in being like they are and you side with. So you like the characters in an unpredictable way.

Whereas watching a show that has nice characters makes for a more relaxed and pleasant viewing. Makes you feel good, like spending time with people who make you feel positive.

I'd probably be more in the pleasant viewing camp usually, but I really like Succession. I suppose my enjoyment is in how the writing and acting has me switching my feelings. If that makes sense?

BrieMine · 03/04/2023 08:58

They are all vile and that’s the joke.

This is it- it is well written in that it gives more and more clues as to why characters are the way they are, doesn't exonerate their behaviour for the viewer but you feel varying levels of empathy and understanding for how screwed up they are.

Sceptic1234 · 03/04/2023 10:20

I agree ... I struggled with it as I didnt like most of the characters. Also....for a show about a buissness empire nobody was ever seen writing reports, preparing accounts etc. They just sat around talking.

The character I found most interesting was his wife. I was expecting a model gold digging "trophy wife" style woman. I certainly did expect a not a middle aged, middle eastern woman.

I thought the scene in the hospital during series 1 was brilliant. Roman, Shiv et al all making plans to spen millions find the top medical team for there father and starting to argue about what to do. His wife very quietly says "He's staying here, I am next of kin and this is my decision, there will be no discussion".

She was way to good for that family, but her performance made me think that maybe there was a bit more to the old man than we were led to believe.

hugefanofcheese · 03/04/2023 10:40

I find Euan the most interesting character! I'm only on S2 and hope there is more about him and their feud- whether he is genuinely loyal or acting out of self interest (trying not to write any spoilers!)

Strumpetpumpet · 03/04/2023 12:58

Ooh thanks everyone, food for thought. I’m a bit disappointed so far but will give it a few more episodes, given your feedback, and see if it grows on me! X

I think the genius of it is yes, they're all vile, but you get to see why they're all vile and start to feel some sympathy for them. It's some of the best writing and acting I've ever seen.

purplepencilcase · 10/04/2023 18:59

Please don't be disappointed!!! Its brilliant! Smart, clever, funny, ridiculous.

I actually like all the characters, for their stupidity and ridiculousness.

I love, love love it. I was gripped from the first scenes.

I started over easter, found the first four episodes a bit tedious, then all of a sudden i really got into it. Some of it makes me laugh out loud it is so far removed from normal life. If you see it for what it is it will work. Then it be becomes addictive! Mid way through second series and i really like it.

madamepresident · 17/04/2023 14:45

It's one of my favourite shows. Extremely well written and acted and the dialogue is top notch. It takes a couple of episodes to get into. A lot of the business jargon goes over my head - I just enjoy watching it for the barbs and insults. You're not supposed to like any of the characters and that's what makes it so good😀
