Looks dreadful.
I'm going to watch classic Oliver Twist with Alastair Simm from TalkingPicsTV

JemimaTab · 26/03/2023 21:14

I don’t have high hopes for this one, from the reviews. I still the 1940’s film version is the best one (and there have been so many over the years). But we’ll see.

ArticSaviour · 26/03/2023 21:27

Lasted five minutes. Utter shite.

JemimaTab · 26/03/2023 21:45

It’s really dragging.
Pip is supposed to be seven at the start of the book, whereas he’s clearly much older here. I thought it was significant that he was a very young child when he first encountered Magwitch, but whatever.
I might give up.

LIZS · 26/03/2023 21:52

Very slow and yes Pip was much younger initially, younger than Estella

Wbeezer · 26/03/2023 21:54

The cinematography is rather good.

woodhill · 26/03/2023 21:54

House looks very sanitised and minimalistic not decaying iftms

Wbeezer · 26/03/2023 21:54

The cinematography is rather good.

Agree.

Watching now, Olivia Coleman just appeared as Miss Havisham. She irritates me as she’s always herself!

Much prefer the Gillian Anderson version, I don’t know why they felt the need to remake it so soon tbh. I don’t think this one is any more inventive.

WhoStoleMyTiddyOggy · 26/03/2023 22:00

God that was 😴

I couldn't get my head around the bright sunshine on Christmas day

Wbeezer · 26/03/2023 22:00

Not sure the girl playing Estella is pretty enough? But maybe that adds something interesting to the story.

WhoStoleMyTiddyOggy · 26/03/2023 22:00

Olivia looks too young and not haggard enough

Daffodilsandbeer · 26/03/2023 22:03

I thought that was excellent and looking forward to next Sunday,

Sausagenbacon · 26/03/2023 22:03

Gave up quickly. Every scene was wrong as it came along. Pip much too old, his home environment too sanitised, his sister just wrong.

Coastalvenues · 26/03/2023 22:06

Give it time, love the cinematography. I just love the story so willing it to be good

PuppyMonkey · 26/03/2023 22:06

Some of it quite good, other bits meh. Feel like we’ve only just had a BBC Great expectations. Do we need this?

What larks.Confused

Willmafrockfit · 26/03/2023 22:07

I have not read it and I enjoyed it, atmospheric and cinematography

motherofkevinnotperry · 26/03/2023 22:10

We loved it

Yes I’ve not read it and didn’t watch whatever everyone else is referring to.

personally we all really enjoyed it here. I like Olivia Coleman too

I think part of the dynamic of the book is that Miss Havisham was abandoned not much older than Estella is at the start.

user146539089 · 26/03/2023 22:13

The house was too nice. I don’t think they made It clear how decent Joe is. They gave too much away, telling so much of Magwitch’s story and portraying Miss Haversham as psychotic from the start.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 26/03/2023 22:14

I thought this was brilliant, absolutely loved it and can't wait for next week!

sashagabadon · 26/03/2023 22:18

I’m enjoying it! Now watching the bbc4 programme on the book with Tony Jordan. I also loved Dickensian!
pip is a young boy? Looks same age as Estella to me. Love the house , very eery.
looking forward to next week. And it’s clearly winter while filming. You can tell by the trees! you can get sunny Christmas Days.

Sparklebrandy · 26/03/2023 22:19

Struggle with Great Expectations re makes. The 1940s version I saw as a teenager when I was off school unwell and was amazed by the story. I live where the prison boat Magwitch escaped from was meant to have been moored and have visited Restoration House on many occasions, however so far enjoyed this evenings adaptation...

sashagabadon · 26/03/2023 22:21

I loved the Gillian Anderson version of miss havisham too.

SweetBonanza · 26/03/2023 22:56

I struggled with Pip - his accent was too posh, and he's not a great actor. His sister was pretty wooden too.
