It's odd watching it with no commentary but no theme tune? Have to say it's quite refreshing without Lineker and friends.

Why was there no theme tune?

I don't like it without commentary tbh

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/03/2023 22:42

It's shit with no commentary or studio discussion. Lineker was at the Leicester match today.

BIWI · 11/03/2023 22:45

'Lineker and friends' are what make MOTD though!

FrownedUpon · 11/03/2023 22:46

I preferred it. I just want to see the goals, not a lengthy dissection of every game.

Thunderpunt · 11/03/2023 22:51

I thought it was quite good too

carriedout · 11/03/2023 22:53

It was shit. I think it would have been better to have just pulled it.

What a mess. Bloody Tories have broken everything!

Soapyspuds · 11/03/2023 22:53

HB is a big football fan.

The general consensus of his Tuesday night football whatsapp group is that the new format plus the commentary is the way to go. Leave out GL,AS and IW and keep the 20 minute format.

Sunshineandrainbow · 11/03/2023 22:55

Didn't like it without the commentary.
And I enjoy the analysis bit.

Now that he is back, and after watching on Saturday night, i think they should give you a red button option so you can either watch it with all the commentary and discussion or just watch the highlights as it was at weekend.

Mumsafan · 13/03/2023 11:56

I never watch it when my team loses anyway 😂

It was shit because they intentionally made it shit. That wasnt even highlights. Even when Lineker and co are talking there is much more football shown.

It was a HUGE opportunity to show how pointless all these pundits are. I have been around football all my life and the majority of people i know watch the football with the commentators and pundits muted. This was the time they could have saved themselves and us a fortune and ditched the pundits.

I dont care about Linekers views but i definitely dont watch MOTD to listen to him

I enjoy the punditry; my son doesn't. I watch from the minute the coverage begins; he comes in seconds before kick off. And he gets a drink/snack/mooches about on his phone at half time. He can choose to mute it, when I'm not around.
I don't have the vast knowledge, and stats to hand, that they do. I don't have the recent history of every team, their strengths, weaknesses, recent injuries etc. I depend on the pundits for all this.
As I depend on the commentary, eg, when I couldn't tell if a player was off side and whether the goal was going to stand. It felt like watching with a delay on!

If they were all let go, what do you think the saved money would be used for?

MintsPi · 13/03/2023 12:31

It was rubbish. If you just want quick highlights they are posted on YouTube very quickly after each match has finished. There is absolutely no need to wait until MOTD.

TheDogsMother · 13/03/2023 14:00

I preferred it and it seems a lot of other people did too as it had 500,000 more viewers than the previous week. Think how much money the BBC could save if they didn't have to pay Gary Lineker !

MockneyReject · 13/03/2023 14:09

People watched it for the novelty value. But would they watch it, week in and week out, in that format? And on the BBC, when it's just highlights, which are available elsewhere?

Don't be silly, it was wall-to-wall news for the days before, of course people watched it, but not for the ultra-dull football clips they could always have watched on YouTube.

RunningFromInsanity · 13/03/2023 14:17

I missed the in-game commentary, seemed strange they couldn’t play that.

MadisonAvenue · 13/03/2023 14:19

I preferred it, I can see what’s going on without an in-depth discussion afterwards.

I also prefer watching the few games that Prime televise for the same reason, there’s the option to switch off commentary and just have the crowd noise.

The commentators refused to work as well

and they had to legally show contractually otherwise they would be in breach of contract with the premier lesgue
