I think the Pontypines are from the Eastern Mediterranean somewhere, perhaps Turkey or Syria.

I find the haa-hoos strangely disturbing - they look a bit psychotic. Like they would happily squish you, and not bat an eyelid.

I absolutely agree about the ha-hoos. They are the stuff of nightmares. For one thing, how can a sentient creature have red and white checks on its skin? I went to sleep very overtired the other day and as I dropped off, a ha-hoo appeared in front of my eyes...
