AIBU The Last Ship (MN recmndtin on Rig Thread) S1 spoilers

I want to register a complaint. I started watching The Last Ship based on @Awrite 's recommendation on this thread here (because I'd enjoyed the Rig)

www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4714024-the-rig-on-amazon-prime

I was trotting along happily really enjoying it. Very much liking Dr Rachel Scott, the very fine Captain Tom Chandler a brave hero and the whole ahead-of-its-time Covidness about the pandemic.

@Awrite was to be congratulated on a fine recommendation.

(End S1 spoilers coming up so look away now)

All going well. But then when the S1 last episode came and Granderson's crew invaded the ship and took control of it while Chandler was trying to rescue his family it really REALLY REALLY ANNOYED ME.

I don't know why it upset me so much. These are my best guesses:

*I think it's because it seemed so bloody desperate showrunner stuff - what can we do to spin out a second season? They didn't need that. I was enjoying it anyway as a character and situation driven drama.

  • I seemed pretty implausible that it could happen in that way as this crew had proved themselves time and time again as adept at managing extraordinary conflict and difficult situations.

*I realised obviously the whole of s2 or at least the beginning would now be taken up with a junk story of them having to re-gain control of the ship which is going to be boring as hell. I'm just not interested in it. I want Tom back on his ship saving the world.

*Did I mention I was annoyed?

More spoilers (look away now again for S2) I was so annoyed that my lovely viewing pleasure was ruined I googled to read what happened in S2 and found out that instead of lovely Dr Scott getting together with the lovely Captain -she dies!!! Although looks like it was because Rhona Mitra had some sort of dispute about her female character path with the powers that be based on social media posts.

Someone please come and be my upset Last Ship Friend.

Anyone on that thread who was watching or has watched bit of it?

@Furries @CampervanKween
@Chikapu @PoorbutHappy @IronOaks @RampantIvy

In other news, I now am in love with Eric Dane (although it may actually be the fictional character of Captain lovely lovely Tom Chandler I love) and wondering if it's possible to stalk someone across an ocean. . .

If anyone is interested this is what Rhona Mitra (Dr Rachel Scott) posted twitter.com/rednaughtmitra/status/763265398816935936

The interesting tweet is :

Rhona Mitra @ rednaughtmitra 10 Aug 2016

it's actually that most male dominated institutions don't like to see women evolve. I don't subscribe to that.

(I found this randomly looking for the plot of S2!)

Thanks for the tag?

I finished watching the whole thing.

Each season is (almost) a stand-alone with regards to the “peril” faced.

Personally, I never understand why people google stuff and then find spoilers. Seems pointless to me. Did I think it was epic? No. Did I keep on watching? Yes. It got me through some winter evenings 🤣

Loved the first series @CpnTomChandlersFanClub. Specially enjoyed the ship's battle tactics and attention to detail. But from series 2 it all starts to go downhill and I never really enjoyed the different storylines. Much preferred Eric Dane in this rather than Grey's Anatomy.

Luana1 · 04/03/2023 16:48

The first two series were great, but all downhill from there unfortunately.

Polgara2 · 04/03/2023 17:07

Aha someone else who is watching it! I’m on series 4 now. Nearly stopped watching it when Rachel died I was so annoyed!

im still enjoying it but maybe not quite as much as I have slowed down in my viewing schedule. Eric Dane being the reason I’m carrying on I think, I was sad when he died in Greys.

burnoutbabe · 04/03/2023 17:33

I watched it all back in the day. And the lovely Eric Dane helped!

Rhona was on the Ben fogel show recently, seems to have withdrawn from public life a bit.

@Furries I agree generally - I only googled to see if the plot of S2 was as I suspected to inform a decision as to whether to give up watching it. if I had a settled intention to watch I wouldn't google.

That's interesting @species5618 @Luana1 - consensus about post-S2. I do like the Rachel character.

@burnoutbabe she's probably unable to concentrate being distracted by how beautiful she is in a mirror. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I think she is SO beautiful facially. I would love to look like her - I think she is breathtaking. I always find it funny how people have really differing views on this type of thing.

We gave up after three episodes, I feel we did well to make it that far.

CpnTomChandlersFanClub · 06/03/2023 16:02

I liked S1 @Chikapu you are harsh! It's certainly no Citizen Cane but has it's own charm. As well as Lovely Captain Tom Lovely Chander.

S2 I'm dubious about pressing on...

It's actually Citizen Kane. My mistake was autocorrect. What's your excuse?

Are you secretly the lawyer Jonathan Coad? Watch it here if you haven't seen this it's marvellous!
