Lidia Poet on Netflix

About halfway through this miniseries and loving this biography of an Italian feminist in the 1880s who actually went to law school, graduated, passed the bar and then was disbarrred for being a woman when she got clients and would have been in a court room. She then fights back and forges her own way being a ‘“lady detective” assisting her brother who is also a lawyer.

I have to say though that I am constantly distracted by how lavish and utterly gorgeous the costuming is! Many of her dresses I’m all 😍 . Perhaps it’s the Italian fashion of the times, but OMG! So much more colourful and stunning than what we see as English Victorian fashion.

I'm glad someone has posted about this!

I'm on episode 2 and really enjoying it. It's visually gorgeous and all Lidia's costumes are to die for. I Googled Lidia Poet and she wasn't admitted to practice law until the age of 65! I wonder whether Netflix will play fast and loose with the true events to make better TV?

And I’m glad someone is also loving this mini-series. I know it’s historical fiction loosely based on her life (like the Crown is historical fiction) but even so what an amazing woman! I thought Netflix did a good job with the courtroom judgements barring her from practising law and wonder if they were reading what was actually written at the time? Certainly sounds like something typically misogynist of the times.

Makes me want to find a book on her.

It is good isn't it. I found myself googling 19th century bicycles as it looked quite modern. Her dresses are lovely and the actress makes me think of Vivienne Leigh .

I love how they use a lot of blue in her costumes which contrasts with the orangey architecture. It's just really beautiful to look at.

Also, the room she was renting in the first episode...interior design goals.

Plus it makes me want to speak Italian...

I might watch another episode at 3am when DD is no doubt awake and wanting to feed!

I noticed too in one episode she wears a dragonfly pin, which back then symbolised transformation and change. Which is something I think a feminist fighting the male establishment would wear as a subversive symbol of activism.

So the costuming just so well thought out, even down to the details. This is going to be something I watch more than once.

Not heard of it but thanks to this thread it's now on my list.

She had some awesome fly earrings as well. I wonder what those symbolise?

As a feminist I realise I should be most interested in the storyline (and I am, I promise!) but I can't stop gushing over the costuming!

I think it was only released about a week ago so most people won't have heard about it yet.

I've binged it over 3 nights....so so good.
Does anyone have any other period recommendations?

If you haven’t seen Harlots or Versailles, highly recommend them both.

Also, if you like the murder mystery Victorian vibe, anothe one is The Alienist set in NYC. Also has a “lady detective” played by Dakota Fanning.

I've never seen Versailles and I actually live there!

Ah, it’s really good! The series didn’t end in the best way as it was unexpectedly cancelled so the tying up of current plots was a bit hurried and contrived. But other than that awesome show! It’s the court of Louis the Sun King.

Just watched the first episode and really enjoyed it although it's hard to keep track of all the male characters with similar facial hair Confused The actress in the title role reminds me of a young Kate Bush.
