purpleme12 · 09/01/2023 22:17

erm no i don't it's TV pace as it says in title and this episode has already been shown on tele on sunday, episode 4
No spoilers means no spoilers from people who've binge watched the whole thing on iplayer.

I think the adaptation has done a poor job of explaining Lyra's motivation which is as much pushed by the alethiometer as by her guilt. I also have no idea why Will is willing to go with her based on what we are watching.

Additionally Lyra is supposed to be a child and I'm afraid Dafne Keen no longer looks like one. I don't think the mature eye makeup has helped.

Oh ok I haven't read the books but I did get the first one in a charity shop so might read it soon

Slightly off topic but home someone can advise.
I watch His Dark Materials with my soon to be 11 yrs old dgd.
I’m thinking of taking her to Oxford for the day to see ‘Lyra’s Oxford’.
Will we be disappointed? Is there anywhere I can get ‘supporting’ info from?
I’m crap at maps and directions but DH is very good. He hadn’t read the books or watched much of the tv series.

caramac04 · 15/01/2023 13:14

‘Hope not home’ dgd nearly 12

fretaway · 18/01/2023 17:24

@caramac04 there is an official walking tour in Oxford that is endorsed by Phillip Pullman. Depends if you want to pay.

Though if you feel up to it you can create your own list and look up on maps.

What ages would you say this is suitable for? Do you think?

I'm not really sure what happened between Mrs Coulter and her Daemon?

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 01/02/2023 23:52

How did Mrs Coulter get rid of the creatures? (Are they angels? I'm not sure) does she have super powers? I'm confused.

And why have we suddenly just seen Will's Daemon but haven't before? I don't understand

OP posts:
CrossPurposes · 02/02/2023 00:40

Mrs Coulter was seen to control the spectres when she was in Cittagazze. So I guess she does have superpowers!

And we had never seen Will's daemon before and the show has given us no idea why she has materialised (unless we both missed that). His reaction to his first sight of her was underwhelming. I don't know whether that's due to the actor, the writing, the direction, or the editing.

And are we the only ones watching it at broadcast pace??

purpleme12 · 02/02/2023 01:11

Ah right it's not just me then who didn't get it!

Yes think it's just us!!

Honestly just read the books. They are so much better. I was watching it thinking I wouldn't have a clue what is going on if I hadn't. The adaptation only tells half a story.

catsnore · 02/02/2023 05:42

I started to write an explanation and then realised it would take too long 😂. Definitely read the books! Also the Book of Dust trilogy which follows/precedes the Dark Materials trilogy. There is more stuff in there about it.

catsnore · 02/02/2023 05:43

(They changed a load of stuff for the tv adaption of course)

purpleme12 · 02/02/2023 08:07

What order should the books be read in?

OP posts:
catsnore · 02/02/2023 09:24

Northern Lights (golden compass)
Subtle Knife
Amber Spyglass

Book of Dust 1
Book of Dust 2

Don't think the last one is out yet. I'm really looking forward to it!!!!
