BBC 4 has shown the series Mystery Road in this slot over the past few years. Must have been popular enough that they have now made a prequel series. Ep 1 & 2 tonight.

The original was always very grim, violent men and terrible racism and I think had Judy Davis in.

Not sure if I am up to it but in case anyone else is interested.

This is a prequel.

I really enjoyed this. I like the pace. Sometimes it's almost in real time ...

These are the original episodes, but if you haven't watched them you may not want to, because they show Jay as an older man, which means much of what happens in this prequil is undermined by knowing how it turns out. (I did hint at this in my OP!)

But yes had forgotten there were 2 films, so not sure how they fit in with the earlier tv (though set later) tv series. First film was called Mystery Road and the second Goldstone.

Have just seen this:

The series is a spin-off from Ivan Sen's feature films Mystery Road and Goldstone, taking place in between the two. Aboriginal Australian detective Jay Swan, played by Aaron Pedersen, is the main character and actor in both the films and in the first two TV series, each of six episodes.
