Marie Antoinette! Where's her maid?

Just watched the first episode of this new series on BBC, and while I enjoyed the programme generally, I couldn't help wondering why the programme makers decided that Marie should travel to France completely alone but for her little dog. She would never have travellled that distance from Vienna (500miles?) in those days without a lady's maid to attend to her needs and keep her company. Was it just that they wanted to emphasise her isolation or what? What were they thinking???

Given the scriptwriter, I was expecting nothing historically accurate at all. Even though it seemed reasonably well paced.

I kept looking at things on Google while I watched and some quite surprising things were historically accurate.

I assume throwing sweets was a custom but far worse than that was having everyone standing round watching you get undressed and spying through the door imo. Very off putting.

Were thoroughly enjoying this. No idea about historical accuracy but what a feast for the eyes. Just done episode 6 where they finally consummate and dear lord that was fruity. The brother had us in stitches.

It a bit horrible knowing what happens to some of the nice people and which of the truly vile people manage to survive.
