Upgrading BBC I player

I have just done this as instructed by the BBC website. My previous version no longer works. Programmes are downloading into the videos folder in my documents, they look like unidentifiable, identical files, but it appears that I have to purchase an app to open them. So, the updated version of I player would seem to be nothing like the one I have been using for the last couple of years.
Have I done something wrong?
Any advice?
TIA

IPlayer app should be free, is this a laptop you are using

Yes, lap top. I have had the I player down load facility for the last couple of years and it works fine, but I tried to download a series today and the instruction on the screen was to install the upgrade. I am hopeless with tech, so I am puzzled by this.

Instead of seeing the black screen and the list of programmes, the downloads are being sent to the video folder in "my documents". I can't open anything.
I am sure I have done something wrong - that is inevitable, but I can't figure out what.

Well! It has suddenly started to work again. Maybe it just took time. I don't know what to make of the all the stuff in my videos folder, but I will ignore it for now. How strange.
Thank you for responding user16480478.

Oh, that's good, it looks like all downloads should go to the app.

Mine went a bit weird after it upgraded so I shut it down then reopened it and it was fine ( unlike my technical language) Hmm
