Kim Kardashian and that Marilyn dress

The Kardashian's is my trash TV guilty pleasure and yes I know it's all largely nonsense.

I've just caught up on the latest episode and it's of Kim wearing the Marilyn Monroe dress for the Met.

I don't know what Kris would have said for Ripleys to allow Kim to try that dress on again after it didn't fit, but watching the scene where they're trying to get it over her massive arse was awful! An iconic dress and you basically bully your way to get your way and it clearly still didn't fit as they couldn't do it up at the back.

Kim denies bum implants/filler/ whatever but if you loose 10Ib in a few weeks like she did for this dress, you're not going to be skinny everywhere else on your body but still have an exaggerated arse.

I just found the scenes with the dress a particular low, especially as Kim usually comes across in recent seasons as quite business smart and sensible.

If you watched it what did you think?

Agree. It really didn’t fit her. There was a big gap over her arse! But it wasn’t flattering either. Strange for her to be so obsessed with getting that dress.

WillowintheUK · 13/11/2022 22:10

I don’t watch the Kardashian’s programme, but I do remember seeing her in the dress.

Marilyn was class. KK definitely isn’t.

But people would spew vitriol about Marilyn Monroe if she were famous now, just like they do about Kim Kardashian.

AllOfThemWitches · 13/11/2022 22:13

If she were alive and at the height of her fame, obviously.

Redwineandroses · 13/11/2022 22:14

And the hours of dying her hair blond, what was all that about! Why didn't she just wear a wig? With her money I'm sure she could have found an amazing blond wig to wear instead of spending 15 hours dying it and worrying your hairs gonna fall out.

I agree. I imagine in those days Marilyn wasn't as "class" as her legend believes since. White blond hair, big boobs which were pushed up for lots of cleavage or in a very pointed bra. Red lipstick, a sultry pout and suggestive poses. An affair with the president, prescription drug abuse and a string of men. She was fab but was no Audrey Hepburn.

If Marilyn was famous in this era now, she'd be judged and shamed like KK is. The difference back then was the lack of instant media and stars could keep an element of mystery about them.

Why couldn’t KK have worn a replica? The damage caused by letting someone wear such a fragile item at all (let alone someone who doesn’t fit it), all for a celebrity’s obsession/vanity is just awful. This is an iconic historic artefact and that damage can’t be undone.

I'd love to know what kris said to Ripleys!

I saw a clip where she was saying that because of the shape of her shoulders she can squeeze into anything. Um, I don't think it's your shoulders that are the issue here** love!

Redwineandroses · 13/11/2022 22:34

What damage would happen to the dress as it was fragile? Is it the oils in your hands? I saw they were all wearing gloves and she put the dress on at the event and only walked the red carpet in it then changed into a replica.

Exactly 😆 I bet the staff who had to force it up around her arse were cringing. I'd be bloody annoyed!

The kardashians are at that point of rich that they just want to get/do stuff that no one else can do. They can literally have anything they want, when they want it, how they want it. Kim wanted the Marilyn dress because she was told she couldn't have it so she had to find a way to prove she could.

flingingmelon · 13/11/2022 22:40

I haven't seen it but it's awful that she was allowed to wear it.

It's an incredibly delicate piece of history. A respectable owner would never in a million years have let her anywhere near it.

And the big joke is that she had an exact replica made, just wear the replica and maybe don't trash the original?

This article explains some of the damage and the horror of textile conservators that she was allowed to do this:

NB Ripleys is not a museum so basically does what it likes 🙄

It's not just the people dressing her that would have done the damage. Any sweat, make up etc coming from KK, not to mention the stress on the seams, the possibility of a thread unravelling the sequins, the transport of it to and from KK, so many factors.

Think priceless painting and then imagine it had been painted on tissue paper.

Redwineandroses · 13/11/2022 22:45

It would have been better, if you can make it better, if kendal or kourtney wanted to wear it as they are very petite women all be it about a foot apart in height!

There's a good discussion around it on here.

The terrible stacked heels she wore killed the way the dress fell at the bottom.
I know she had to wear them bc the length couldn't be altered but it ruined the whole flow of the dress.

It's sad in that article when it says Kim wearing it didn't add any further importance to the dress and the story now doesn't just belong to Marilyn ☹️

I saw this episode and agree. She did allllll that huffing and puffing thinking she was going to do ✨️something✨️only for Rihanna to be honoured with a statue by the Met that very night (Rihanna stole the show and she wasn't even there)🤭

Yeah, the whole dress just didn't look right on her did it. I'm really not sure why she pushed for it so hard because it's not like it flattered her in anyway, it just highlighted how opposite her figure is to what Marilyn's was. And considering Marilyn was considered one of the sexiest women ever..

She shouldn't have been allowed near that dress. It simply didn't fit her and got damaged.

CarefreeMe · 13/11/2022 23:02

I do find it amusing that people get so defensive of Marilyn Monroe yet she too was just as scrutinised as Kim is but now she’s dead then she’s idolised.

I personally could not be bothered going to all that effort for a dress that she wore for about 5 minutes and probably cost her millions, when actually no one would know if she wore the replica the entire time.

But this is part of her job though.
The met is a big deal and you need to stand out and do something unique.
I think it was lady gaga who had like 3 dress changes on the carpet.

She did do well to lose the weight so quickly and you can definitely see it in her face but you cannot help your body type and it was silly to think that by loosing weight she could fit into it properly when she says herself how difficult it is to find clothes that fit her curves.
