Escape to the Chateau anyone?

I have such a love/hate relationship with this programme. On the one hand - clocks have changed, evenings are dark and there's nothing nicer than settling on the sofa for some gorgeous house envy. And it is SUCH a gorgeous house.

On the other hand, I feel the projects are now transparently tv-fodder and the ideas are getting increasingly batshit. Tiles decoupaged with paper napkins? I give those 6 months. (But then, they're selling up so they don't care!)

Anyone else watching?

They’re selling up? Was that said at the beginning, I missed the first ten minutes.

Ive always loves this show, but I know what you mean, it’s a bit much. I do love Dick’s ability to do literally anything.

Cupcakegirl13 · 30/10/2022 20:39

Selling up ?!!😱😱

XJerseyGirlX · 30/10/2022 20:39

Are they selling up ? I missed that bit too

SwedishEdith · 30/10/2022 20:40

I missed the selling up bit and was saying the same about the tiles. Are they staying in France?

Lurleene · 30/10/2022 20:42

I don't think they are selling up, it is just the final series.

I love Chateau DIY, so many people at different stages on their chateau journeys, it's very addictive.

XJerseyGirlX · 30/10/2022 20:42

Just googled it , they aren't selling .. phew

I wish they’d put DIY on again. I really enjoyed watching that.

Stephaneee?

minou123 · 30/10/2022 20:51

Why did nobody tell me it's back on????

I love this show. I always think Angel's ideas are completely wacky and ridiculous, but then by the end when they show it all completed, I love it!

BeforetheFlood · 30/10/2022 20:53

I might have completely misunderstood the selling up thing! I'm sure I read it on a thread here a year or so ago maybe (It must have been here, it's where I get all my info about everything!)

I know it's going to be the last series and I thought that was because they were selling, but it could be that they are just 'moving on' to new projects, and I have been duped by a clickbait tabloid headline.

Apparently they're off to Australia early next year, though I don't know if they are moving there semi-permanently, or just on tour with their stage show thing. That must be so disruptive and unsettling for the children, I think. They came to the theatre in the (very small provincial) town near me, the four of them. Honestly, like the Von Trapps. You'd think the kids are just too old to be used for that sort of publicity now.

Just seen your post XJerseyGirl! Phew indeed.

@Priminister a new series of DIY was on recently, in fact I finished watching it on catch-up just a couple of days ago. The last 3 series have been renamed Chateau DIY rather than Escape to the Chateau DIY but there are still most of the same people.

SwedishEdith · 30/10/2022 20:56

Can't imagine wanting to go and see them live anyway but didn't realise the kids would be dragged along as well.

Taytocrisps · 30/10/2022 21:24

I love it but mainly for the aerial shots of the chateau. I need a Dick to do all the DIY jobs in my house.

TheSpottedZebra · 30/10/2022 21:28

I used to love it, but it's just gone on too long now. IMHO they're all about their shows now - as that's where they make their money I guess.

I liked the early ones and when they were doing the garden. But these projects are as PP said, just transparent filler. And Dick seems a bit of a controlling arse.

I also much prefer chateau DIY!

Just self-ID; you'll be grand.

PurplePositivity · 30/10/2022 21:33

I prefer The DIY Chateau programme, I binged watched it when I had covid.

Dick's eldest son was on a cookery programme on Saturday morning, going round the posh houses of Northern Ireland.

LisaJool · 30/10/2022 21:35

Used to really like this but can't stand the sight of them now. Too many fake projects and "we're down to our last £100 so decided to install a £20k lift". Dick is insufferable, the son was turning out like him too. And don't get me started on Angel finding it funny that she still can't speak French.

BeforetheFlood · 30/10/2022 21:50

Yeah, I didn't want to be the person who starts a thread and then just snipes, but part of my ambivalence about the programme is because I get a distinctly controlling vibe from Dick. Like his mood could quickly turn and you never quite know how he's going to react. (I have also read a few things about big fall outs with the production team etc, in which they don't come across well, but I guess that's tabloid gossip and there's 2 sides to a story etc. But it has to be said it's not hard to believe.)

OP posts:
Howeverdoyouneedme · 30/10/2022 22:01

Did Angel say today she still couldn’t speak French?

AriettyHomily · 30/10/2022 22:58

They're not selling up they just went back for a visit after covid restrictions lifted. I can't decide if I love them or hate them.

LisaJool · 31/10/2022 06:59

@Howeverdoyouneedme she said it a few series ago, when they'd be living there for several years. It just came across as incredibly arrogant.

whatsthestory123 · 31/10/2022 18:15

angel is always fannying about with flowers

dick is a complete know all and is heading for a stroke/heart attack

arthur needs to slim down

the little girl seems ok

where are grandma and pappy (fgs not plain old grandad oh no got to be pappy)

oh yes everybody eat's sushi and are so well read on everything

the little girl is now wearing the head scarf of a french peasant (no doubt ordered by angel)

in other words ive fallen out of love with the programme

LisaJool · 31/10/2022 18:32

I've just remembered one of things that I hated, Angel doing painting/manual work in one of those silky kaftan things. Who on earth would do that?

TheSpottedZebra · 31/10/2022 19:25

OP earlier mentioned Stephanie from Chateau DIY...

She is now/also a successful YouTube-er and has a Patreon where middle-agedwomen and gay men send her money each month for - a peek into her life or something. She's raking it in! C. £30k pm, IIRC! For years.

But there is also a corner of or Tattle where they HATE HER and plot her downfall. And sort of make up imaginary li especially where they (ok, a couple) are aristos with staff themselves, or where they are suing her,or they k ow her and all her secrets

It is tremendously curious and most odd, and got me through sick leave after a surgery.
