Is anyone else watching this new drama?

I was dubious as I watched the opening, thinking it was a new ‘Emily in Paris’ style show, but four hours into my binge-watch I’m bawling my hours out at the plot twist.

Hoping for a happy ending.

Same! I thought wud be a cliche romantic comedy where you know the end before you’ve started it. But I binge watched and now can’t get it out my head!

CookPassBabtridge · 25/10/2022 19:34

Sat here in tears after just finishing it.. absolutely beautiful. I usually can't stand love stories on tv.

countdowntonap · 26/10/2022 13:38

I’m surprised more people aren’t watching it - was completely expecting there to be a 50+ post thread in TellyAddicts. Maybe the first episode put people off? It’s definitely more about relationships than romance.

Can anyone explain the significance of the cake? Was it just another one of those things that was never meant to be?

I watched it over the weekend, I think it just came out. would be shocked if it didn’t become super successful.

i’’m usually not into love stories either but the show had so many layers. Both families’ dynamics were very interesting, as was her relationship with her sister.

I can’t remember anything about a cake, what was it?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 26/10/2022 22:59

I finished it over two days, loved it.

Cried myself silly though.

I thought it handled lots of themes really well, including family, race, love, culture etc.

I was sad that Leno never got to open his own restaurant though, he came so close.

LizzieSiddal · 26/10/2022 23:01

Thanks for the heads up, I’m looking for a new series having just finished Bad Sisters.

CookPassBabtridge · 27/10/2022 00:13

I was quite curious of the extended families relationships. So hands on.. How could they afford to take so much time off? To be with them all the time through the hardships, medical stuff. Never known a family like it.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/10/2022 10:30

Spoiler Alert*

Yeah I thought that about the financial aspect, thought that was just breezed over when in rl Leno and Amy would be so poor even with insurance. There's no way that Amy could have afforded to jet off to Scilly and not be working at the end.

The family dynamics were interesting, I thought the sister was amazing and she was right when she pulled Amy up about not supporting her.

The way they handled Lenos death was well done though, realistic and heartbreaking.

SavingsThreads · 28/10/2022 22:06

I’m just finishing it but didn’t think it was very good. First half was a real slog and the original episode didn’t set up the chemistry very well.

but the bit I can’t get over is Filomena saying she’d never drink wine… she’s Sicilian!!! It’s so implausible it’s weird.

WLAH · 29/10/2022 00:33

Just finished.some tears but did enjoy it

SavingsThreads · 29/10/2022 09:36

@countdowntonap and @Summerof22 the cake was the gift they brought back from Sicily for the market traders cousin. All they had was his name and the fact he was in Hollywood.

The significance was that when they tracked him down, he was the community centre manager where Amy ended up volunteering, and became a great friend to them. He was at the party at the end.

Showed the power of community and the Sicilian way of life I guess.

Summerof22 · 29/10/2022 09:52

@SavingsThreads , oh yes, that cake!

NowThatsWhatICall22 · 29/10/2022 22:52

Anyone still mourning the loss of This Is Us, will love this. I really enjoyed it- and fully appreciated the beautiful scenery, styling, Italian food and wished I had a family that would travel globally for me at the drop of a hat…Anyway, I had several snotty sobs as I had with TIU, it was well worth the binge.

Motherofalegend · 29/10/2022 23:19

I watched it. Found it hard to get into at first - never seen Zoe Saldana in a non-action film!

i enjoyed it and cried a lot!

thefemaleJoshLyman · 30/10/2022 12:31

Finished this last night. Cried a lot. Thought the acting was great. The family acceptance at the end was wonderful. I was also desperate for Amy's sister to have her happy ending.

Thought it was interesting to see De Luca from Grey's Anatomy in the first episodes.

NowThatsWhatICall22 · 30/10/2022 16:35

@thefemaleJoshLyman that first ep is was really bugging me who he was, had to Google immediately after- of course it was DeLuca (not so nice character though!)

Swissnotswiss · 30/10/2022 16:45

It's not often you see tv series in Sicilian so I liked that. I found Amy a bit annoying at first but she grew on me. Lino's parents seemed like total caricatures though. I know lots of Sicilians and was already living in Italy in this period but I don't know anyone who would cut off their child because he was a.... chef😂 Also when they fly to the USA they don't know how to use an escalator - why? Surely they've just come from an Italian airport which I'm pretty sure had escalators. 🙄

AhmenGwendolyn · 30/10/2022 21:02

I feel so sad, DH had cancer, we are both orphans. Watching the family wiz in and embrace her… it’s a hard watch

Inmyhandbag · 05/11/2022 11:55

Just finished watching and thought it was beautiful, a little slow to start with but worth persevering. The ending was lovely.

mileaminute · 05/11/2022 12:10

I've only watched the first episode and couldn't get past the fact that mid-40s Zoe Saldana was playing a college student? Presumably meant to be early 20s?? She's absolutely brilliant and beautiful I just wish they had tweaked the story a little so she was a mature student?
As I was searching Twitter to see if anyone else felt the same way (lol) I saw the spoiler and not sure I want to watch the rest as DH is currently going through chemo after a return of his cancer 🙃

CookPassBabtridge · 05/11/2022 14:15

Yep the age thing was very noticable, she is beautiful.. a beautiful woman clearly in her 40s! Why did they make out like she was 20/25..

PompomDahlia · 05/11/2022 15:47

I loved it - definitely elements of This is Us and I cried my eyes out and am still thinking about it after finishing it.

IRL I think her parents are pretty wealthy which explains the time off and being so present - they seem a retry amazing family in terms of achievements as her sister is a v famous (and good!) writer!

ironingboredrefusal · 06/11/2022 19:05

It's an excellently written and directed series. Reminds me a lot of PS I Love You but this series made me cry a lot more.

PNDoula · 11/11/2022 12:52

I too thought of ps I love you

it’s beautifully written

Mainframetimechange · 12/11/2022 00:50

I loved this, so beautiful, so many tears! Didn't think about it at the time but definitely a This is Us feel.

Anyone else want to call their other half amore after watching this?!
