YEY. just seen the new season is starting 23 October. I binge watched the others earlier in the month so can’t wait for it to start again. The ending was a shocker that I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to see where they’re taking it. Will serena joy get let go because she was under his orders AND she’s having a baby. Or will she get put into jail and baby taken away when he’s born.

Waterford!

That's a great theory @EmpressaurusOfWitchesBackFromTheDead - I hadn't even thought of that!

Much prefer episodes not directed by Elisabeth Moss, they have less angry-June-super-close-ups . They're self-indulgent shots that now add zero to the storytelling and atmosphere.

I also hate to say it, as the first two series are some of the best TV ever made, but the gaping plot holes and lack of world building that Atwood does so beautifully means I'm glad they're wrapping this up next season. It's running out of steam.

Feeling similar but will still watch! Hope it gets better. Feel like it needs a good twist.

Is Serena's new 'posting' in Canada?

I too am so confused about how Serena was essentially imprisoned? in Canada, then went to Gilead for the funeral, then back to Canada and now completely free?!

I think I missed something with this.

UnderHisPie · 15/11/2022 10:36

I think the theory is that...

  • in Canada she was a prisoner
  • Canada made an agreement with Gilead that Serena would be released to Gilead (presumably some kind of trade deal or political agreement)
  • Gilead than chose to post her on Gildea soil within Canada (the information centre was technically Gilead land within Canada)
  • when the information centre building was closed, Gilead appear to have moved her to another Gilead pocket of land within Canda, which is the Wheeler's house

I think it's all a bit of a stretch, but think that's what's meant to be happening.

UnderHisPie · 15/11/2022 10:38

Just to add: if my theory is right then they must be 'technically' a prisoner within the Wheeler's house. She has to stay primarly on Gilead soil, meaning she cannot just move out.

I think.

Tulipomania · 15/11/2022 11:09

Thanks that's v helpful Under

Thanks that all makes sense.

I wish they had shown something of the Canadians doing a deal with Gilead through as I totally would not have picked that up unless you had explained it.

Maybe this couple have been promised Serena’s baby.

I LOVE this theory!

I love it too!

TheBelmont · 15/11/2022 18:08

I really get a lot out of Eyes on Gilead…they notice soooo many more details and make connections that make me go “oh yes!” but I never make myself. I think I like listening to it more that watching the episodes sometimes

OnTheBoardwalk · 15/11/2022 20:35

@TheBelmont I want to listen to the pod casts but am worried it would ruin it for me

when I watch tv/film I believe it’s true. I don’t watch the green screen/special effects, talking to the people playing the part etc

do pod casts talk about the 'real' events in the show or more? Talking about books etc is fine

TheBelmont · 15/11/2022 20:58

@OnTheBoardwalk I think it enhances the experience for me…each podcast they dissect the previous episode in quite a lot of detail and the presenters observes different things that they talk about. It really helps…sometimes you watch an episode and think wtf was that all about? And then they debate different possible interpretations…and quite often they are different to mine so I find it fascinating and it makes me think much more deeply about it. There are some interviews with cast members and writers but those are ‘bonus’ podcasts (you can skip them) and usually it’s finding out what they think about when playing the characters they are playing and what they think their motivations are. They don’t do spoilers as long as you listen to each episode after it has aired! They don’t really talk about special effects but they do comment on the artistic elements of the show (they are obsessed with X’s and O’s) such as the cinematography or the possible meaning behind the music selected.
so interesting! Who’s have thought so much though went into producing a TV show!

ProseccoOnIce · 16/11/2022 07:06

I'm another one wondering how Luke, Moira & June afford that big house without working.

And we haven't heard anything about Emily & the other Handmaids who returned to Gilead for revenge - although they returned to get the Commanders, I thought they might have targeted Serena.

And where is Nick?

I LOVE this theory!

That's brilliant! Would make perfect sense. I thought they were just intended to spy on her and maje sure she toes the line. They could then keep her as a Handmaid once the baby is old enough

Boom! There beginneth The Testaments.

Was that a quote from The Testaments?

incognitocheeto · 16/11/2022 15:30

No Testaments spoilers please! Some of us haven't read the book 📕

Was that a quote from The Testaments?

No, just me! No spoilers but those who have read TT will know what I mean.

Katyaadlerscoat · 16/11/2022 16:08

I've read TT but have forgotten a lot. A shame we can't discuss it here as I can't remember the significance of that quote from Cdr Lawrence. I dont agree with the "rule" of not discussing it here but hey ho. Under his eye and all that.

Katyaadlerscoat · 16/11/2022 16:10

Have we met the Wheelers before? I presume the man of the house will just be a Mr and not a Cdr? Surely they are in Canada and not Gilead?

I’ve just reread The Testaments. I was thinking of starting a new spoilery thread on it in What we’re reading. Shall I do that & link from here?

incognitocheeto · 16/11/2022 15:30

It’s a quote from last Sunday’s episode.
Commander Lawrence says it.

www.mumsnet.com/talk/what_were_reading/4678974-the-testaments-handmaids-tale-uk-pace

A thread with spoilers for The Testaments but no spoilers for THT. Hopefully this will work!

incognitocheeto · 16/11/2022 19:35

@Abra1t yes I know I was just pre-empting any potential spoilers

ProseccoOnIce · 16/11/2022 20:19

I think I might re-read the Testaments after the end of the current series.

I absolutely loved the book of the Handmaids tale, but not so much the testaments- very clearly written with tv/movie in mind.
