Blonde

I was really looking forward to Blonde , the Marilyn Monroe thing on Netflix. It was a massive disappointment. Although the actor playing Marilyn was excellent, I felt it was exploitative and very unpleasant in tone, almost pornified with her calling all her lovers " daddy" the abortion scene definitely was horrible and again exploitative. Yes I know Monroe had a tragic life, but this seems to be adding to exploitation she suffered , rather than exploring positive aspects like her genuine talent as an actor.

Turned it off after 20 minutes as too triggering. Grim.

sunnyfizzo · 30/09/2022 08:07

I agree, a tough watch and triggering for some. But, I liked it. I think her life has been sugar coated over time...a pin up, successful female, attractive, loved....mental health is much more prominent in today's society so I did appreciate her story and what she went through.

Galarunner · 30/09/2022 08:47

Interesting, I can see that but it just seemed to focus on the abuse, exploitation, her talent and political views could have been explored. She was an early advocate of civil rights. The threesome scenes had no basis in fact and were just there for titillation.

Yes I agree. I guess with prominent figures they'll be multiple biographies, focussed on different aspects for different audiences. It wasn't what I was expecting for sure, was uncomfortable, and I def won't be recommending it to my parents! I suppose like most people we only imagine what goes on behind closed doors, I'm glad have know more of the back story and what success cost her though.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 30/09/2022 09:03

I hated it. Watched about half and gave up. It was depressing and awful and too clever for its own good. Felt very male gazey.

pinksunsets · 30/09/2022 22:35

Gave up after an hour. It was so dull and joyless. The whole Norma hating Marilyn thing got tiresome - surely part of her must have wanted film stardom and success? Her life is interesting enough, no need to make up the whole throuple relationship. Ana's performance was amazing - she deserved to be in a much better film. And the foetus scenes... wtf.

Me too. I started to feel nauseated, and I'm not sure why, as I am not a prude.
Certain aspects were a bit triggering, so I could not have stood any more.
Her life really was tragic, I don't know why it was made to seem even more sordid.
Den of Geek have done a couple of good reviews, and they say that a lot of what is in the film (and the book which was used as source material) was made up.

Watched half then abandoned it. Male gazey as someone said and actually very dull.

xsquared · 01/10/2022 01:00

It's very miserable and disturbing.

colouringindoors · 01/10/2022 23:01

Awful, exploitative and definitely for "the male gaze" fictitious threesomes and BJ. Awful.

sweetkitty · 02/10/2022 19:10

She did have a very tragic life but again like others I felt this film version was dull and using shock value for the sake of it. The threesome part was unnecessary. The blowjob scene just gross and obviously for the male gaze.

woff45 · 02/10/2022 19:15

I'm glad have know more of the back story and what success cost her though.

It wasn't her story though, it's based on a novel about her. It's described as a biopic but it isn't. It's hugely misleading and disrespectful.

rookiemere · 02/10/2022 19:23

Just trying to watch it at the minute, it's awful.
The threesome is completely made up - no basis in fact as far as I am aware.

Tootels · 05/10/2022 06:54

I'm surprised they were allowed to associate her name with this. Does she still have any distant family around? Does anyone have a say?

purplerain13 · 05/10/2022 21:06

It does not reflect her real life though. It bastardises not only her life, but also the life of JFK.
