So important that Sign Language is promoted in a positive way!!

Fantastic, thanks for the heads up

Prescottdanni123 · 22/09/2022 22:16

Got it recorded. Recently started learning BSL myself

Elderflower14 · 22/09/2022 22:24

I can sign... I'm not brilliant but I manage... Being dyspraxic makes it more difficult.
I tweeted JB earlier and told him my story of when ds2 was 3...My friend came to visit and I told ds2 she was going home to eat her rabbit instead of feed her rabbit!!
Ds2 recognised some of the people in the programme.

I watched it and it was very good. I tuned in sort of half way through, did his son lose hearing as a child?

Elderflower14 · 22/09/2022 22:38

As a teenager... He had an illness which caused him to lose it.

Amazing programme, the best part was when JB was talking to the teacher who lost his hearing at 6 and he realised he should never of tried to “fix” his son.!was emotional.

CarolNoE · 22/09/2022 23:22

Just watched it on +1. Brilliant show - really interesting.

Liila · 23/09/2022 07:42

Even for level 1 his BSL was terrible. They should've concentrated on learning BSL as a family (hasn't he got other sons?), building more bridges with his ds and saved the gig until he could at least do the very basics more convincingly. Lots of waving his hands about without any actual ability.
Nice idea but the gig was all about him, not his son imo.

happinessischocolate · 23/09/2022 12:30

I loved it and wish they'd do more episodes. It showed how it was a journey for both of them, it was lovely to see Joe so much happier.

Im 50+ and have been very deaf for 35 years and this has inspired me to finally learn BSL, like Joe I've tried to stay in the hearing world, but feel no one understands.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 23/09/2022 12:56

This left me thinking about parenting (rather than just about deafness) and about how wanting to make your child 'better' (while loving them so much you'd take on their burden in a heartbeat) can (accidentally) leave them feeling not good enough in your eyes.

Yes - it was about John (rather than Joe). This was the intention and Joe made it clear that he didn't want to lose too much of his own privacy.

It was very good to see Joe looking so much better later in the process. (There is irony in that terrible signing was helping the two of them communicate so much better than their fluent talking.)

It was inspirational.

Great I just watched tonight's before watching the others!! No wonder it wasn't what I was expecting!
Anyway it was interesting watching the sign language.
Although I didn't find them that funny but then I don't find a lot of English speaking comedians funny anyway 🤣

purpleme12 · 27/09/2022 23:51

But I will watch the first 2 episodes!

purpleme12 · 28/09/2022 00:28

Watching the first episode now even the barstaff are BSL users

purpleme12 · 28/09/2022 01:04

I thought it was really good.

It felt like there was a lot of hurt on Joe's side towards his dad and it almost felt like we were prying at some points to me.

But they obviously have the money to learn BSL. If only it was that accessible to everyone (I wear hearing aids)

sashh · 28/09/2022 02:28

I enjoyed it, but I did wonder why they didn't learn the Liverpool signs.

@purpleme12 that's not that unusual when you have a regular 'Deaf night', some pubs also employ Deaf people for that night.

purpleme12 · 28/09/2022 08:16

Oh I see

I’ve just got round to watching this. I was surprised at how ill at ease John bishop seemed with himself and his family. On Instagram (I know, I know) he comes across as a devoted family man yet he seemed quite distanced from his wife and had a stilted relationship with his son. He seemed incapable of communicating in any depth with his son.
