I couldn't see an existing thread on this, apologies if there is and I missed it.

Anyway, as it says in the thread title. New series starts tonight.

Yay!

Tonight's episode has made me cross.

I'm going to watch some Australian bake off to soothe myself. Finished series 6, so now going back to series 4.

I've never seen a contestant before going on so much every week about wanting to be star baker. It's almost like he's being deliberately set up to fail 🤷🏻‍♀️

i think so, and so many times the camera went to him,
i remember i found the editing off putting in the past

Fizbosshoes · 26/10/2022 07:48

I expected Kevin to go today although his cake fulfilled the brief and tasted nice. I think it was an error trying to do a tiered cake made almost entirely of custard.
Sandro did come across a bit smug this week. I'm hoping Abdul gets to the final, he's almost been in the background for much of the series.

And I didn't understand the comment about Janeusz wearing high heels to practise his show stopper...? He said he needed to know he could wear them for Halloween week....but wasn't that (inexplicably) last week? So confused!

newnamethanks · 26/10/2022 08:20

Bakers, be warned. You cannot stack a 3 tier custard no matter how lovely you are. Because it's custard.

LizTrussed · 26/10/2022 09:23

You never know how much is just the sneaky 'make this a story' editing but I felt there was a bit of deliberate juxtaposition last night between everyone rallying round to help Kevin stack up his wibbly-wobbly gateau in the final moments... apart from Sandro, who was putting the finishing touches to his towering 'tribute to a friend' which he didn't get to exploit, Strictly/X Factor style.

LizTrussed · 26/10/2022 09:24

I'm also going off Janusz a bit. ENOUGH with the drip cakes.

They know what they will be making for each episode before they even start filming. He could easily be practising any of his recipes in the lead up to the Halloween filming.

knittingaddict · 26/10/2022 10:44

I was expecting Kevin to go home this week, but have no clue how he lost out to a cake that tasted horrible (PH's words). I've really liked Janusz, but I thought he should have gone instead of Kevin.

Cuck00soup · 26/10/2022 11:37

Sandro didn't come over well last night but you have to wonder if he was fed questions and then edited to look smug.

Sandro do you think you have done enough to be star baker type thing.

Also agree to keep an eye on Abdul. These shows are often edited to keep the eventual winner in the shadows until the later episodes.

ArcaneWireless · 26/10/2022 11:47

Granted that the smugometer was ramped up to gas mark 10 last night but for me, he has been smug from the get go. Unwatchably so.

Fizbosshoes · 26/10/2022 11:56

Did anyone else notice Sandros glare to Sybira when she was named star baker?

I did, yes - but it really made me wonder how heavy-handed the editing has been this series. So many little glares and pouts, from everyone, which could be taken totally out of context for all I know. It feels more engineered than normal.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/10/2022 13:23

It is not like the public even get a vote

It's worth re-visiting.

Wish 1-3 were available.

I did but I also thought it looked very deliberately edited that way.

bibliomania · 26/10/2022 14:01

I don't want the editing to whip up negative feelings about contestants - I want to see nice people making nice things to eat. I still like all the contestants and hope to keep it that way.

ArcaneWireless · 26/10/2022 14:03

A MN friend suggested I try AusBakeOff - it sounds promising.

As with a lot of skill set programmes, I honestly feel as though they are going all for the character rather than skills.

I know they have to make it entertaining but dumbing it down or introducing drama (editing/rushing tasks/making them try to set ice cream in a boiling kettle etc) isn’t fun viewing for me.

It just makes me want to open my nan’s old BeRo cookbook on a random page and fluff about myself.

I doubt there will be a custard cake in that. Or sugar knitting. Or any other futile task.

I agree.

I like it when they help each other out when a cake collapses etc.

I know it's a competition, but I like to see camaraderie.

Unfortunately I think Kevin had to be sacrificed in custard week. Even
though Januzs was worse this week everyone knows he's the superior baker overall. Bloody stupid though as judges said Kevin's custard was perfect.

How on earth was he "sacrificed"? I was sorry to see him go but he had been a weaker baker from the start and his cake concept was flawed. It tasted good but had no structural integrity. He's been lucky to survive this long.

ArcaneWireless · 26/10/2022 15:45

I would rather eat a (bowlful of?) cake that looked awful but tasted divine than a structurally sound cake that was mediocre or worse.

Djangor3725 · 26/10/2022 15:51

The editing definitely happens or did. Some years ago a contestant of an early series did a blog the following year that linked in with the next Bake off. She didn't let out a load of secrets but she did write that she & her fellow contestants were very well aware that everything was going to be heavily edited, but they hadn't expected the cutting & pasting that was done. When the programme came out she was really disappointed to see herself & other contestants looking angry or disappointed when star baker was announced as she said that never happened - everyone was always just happy for whoever got star baker as they all knew that person could be out of the competition the next week. She realised that if you made a cross or disappointed face when one of your bakes didn't turn out as you hoped then the editors might well cut that bit out & then paste the cross face in when star baker was announced.

LadyEloise1 · 26/10/2022 17:29

Poor Janusz this week 😮
He is such a proficient amateur 😉baker.

BestIsWest · 26/10/2022 17:45

Oh was that the intensive care doctor from series three? Danny? I remember reading her blog at the time.

Djangor3725 · 27/10/2022 06:23

Yes - it was Danny.

Simonjt · 27/10/2022 06:47

A friend was on bake off, and he had a similar experience, he wasn’t the one negatively edited, but he had noticed others were, he had been edited in an incorrect way, one you could actually pinpoint due to having a bit of food on his t-shirt that was visible throughout the show, despite it only being there on day one of the weekend of filming.
