Stewart Lee's Snowflake & Tornado - anyone been watching?

Snowflake is out, Tornado's been postponed I think but I watched Snowflake yesterday, following seeing an interview where Rob Brydon interviewed Stewart Lee and said how brilliant it was.

I watched it and was pretty underwhelmed. It's lyrical and dextrous and clever but I found it ponderous and got bored about two thirds of the way in. It's just so self aware of it's cleverness at the expense of content. It's more performance art than comedy.

I think he has a point about Ricky Gervais running out of steam in that I adore Gervais, especially The Office. but After Life for me was just so mawkish and his live shows seem to be a bit phoned in in recent years.

Did anyone else watch it?

I watched it and I have seen these shows twice live. I think it's brilliant and stomach-achingly funny.

Watched it last night. And while the best piece of stand-up I've seen since the last Stewart Lee I watched - and very hilarious in many parts - it's also the only show I remember of his where I felt there were quite a few places it could have been substantially better.

But he's in a league of his own really. If you're a fan, that is. If not, I imagine it's often "incredibly irritating". ;)

I did get bored and start looking at my phone half way through. I'm ambivalent about him tbh, he can be very funny. I have preferred other routines he has done.

Before or after the Tony Parsons bit? I liked that a lot.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/09/2022 22:54

Where is it on?

Ridiculousradish · 29/09/2022 22:59

I saw it live twice with my boyfriend who thinks he's amazing. I do not.

Some good bits but not his best, still miles better than most of the stuff out there

YourLipsMyLips · 30/09/2022 20:24

I saw it live and watched it again the other day; definitely agree with content over comedy, although that's kind of his point isn't it.

I do think he was funnier ten years ago.

I suspect it's better live, when there's more interaction with the audience and ad-libbing.

dutyfirstselfsecond · 01/10/2022 20:57

I used to love SL but "these days" i find myself drawn more to Gervais

dutyfirstselfsecond · 01/10/2022 20:58

Maybe i mean "nowadays "

Forgotten

FWIW I watched it and thought it seemed dragged out and couldn't help but think the laughter and applause had been "curated" somewhat. The only bit I can actually remember smiling at is the reference to Ted Bovis from Hi de Hi...😳

I quite enjoyed Tornado. Not fussed about Snowflake. We used to make a big effort to get up to Leicester Square for each new show to see him, but haven't seen him live for years now

ExtraOnions · 02/10/2022 19:45

I watched it live, and loved it. I go to all his tours though - already booked for Basic Lee next year.

There was more to the Gervais bit .. he was talking about “punch down” comedy - which is exactly what Gervais, Carr and other do. I remember him talking about Carr “get your rape jokes here.. plenty of rape jokes to go round”..
