cheapskatemum · 17/08/2022 19:21

What channel, it sounds like something I'd be interested in?

LadyEloise1 · 18/08/2022 08:34

Channel 4 Tuesdays at 8 and on All4.

I'm scared to look. What happens if it's mine?!! 🙈

Dartsplayer · 24/08/2022 22:34

My new favourite property programme

Mooserp · 25/08/2022 14:43

I've been watching and quite enjoying. The woman this week who went way over budget, I'm guessing that extra all came from her poor parents!

LadyEloise1 · 25/08/2022 19:51

Her "poor parents" might not be that poor. 😀

I thought though she had an engagement ring on at the end ?

Some of the renovator's budgets have been minuscule and totally unrealistic ( certainly where I live ).

I’m quite enjoying it.
It got some stick for the budget to be unrealistic but aren’t they always?

CosmopolitanPlease · 26/08/2022 12:00

I don't think much of it. It's all about the 'profit' they can make (although they don't sell the house and nobody knows what will happen to the market) and not what the homeowner actually likes or works for them.

I also get enormously irritated by grammatical errors like 'unpractical' and 'properties have risen by 11%'.

Yes! I was annoyed by those comments too

whomoon · 26/08/2022 19:26

I said exactly the same to my DP about the presenter saying ‘unpractical’!

It almost seems like a programme for very young people, inexperienced, starting out in the world kind of people (whoever that target audience is!) and not bothering with correct grammar, or even correct information or advice.

Its all profit profit profit! Like the woman on the last episode, the female presenter kept on pushing her to get quotes, get the cheapest you can, haggle haggle haggle. Then the plasterers she chose were the cheapest, did a terrible job then stopped turning up. So she had to find someone herself and actually look at their body of work, recommendations, fair price of their work plasterers. Probably someone her dad had recommended had he sounded a lot more switched on than then so called professional presenters!

I wonder why the presenters are there at all. Like the last episode, he kept on harping on about getting a driveway in at the front of the house. Probably the lost expensive thing to do, adding in a dropped kerb, and he made he feel like that was top priority when the house wasn’t even liveable yet!

even so. I will keep on watching. Just so I can moan and judge haha

vroom321 · 27/08/2022 09:46

They totally slate the "before" home. I keep thinking that could be someone's parents or grandparents home. No need for those comments.

The profit thing is weird as if you're not selling it doesn't matter?

Are the presenters property developers? Of course they will only be thinking of the money but this isn't what the show is about!

Tinkerblonde1 · 27/08/2022 09:59

I like the fact it is nice to see normal houses developed as in it's not like lll with huge budgets.
Agree with unpractical

I was shocked the that a smaller shower room had such impact on profit . It certainly wouldn't in my neck of the woods but guess everywhere is different.

CosmopolitanPlease · 27/08/2022 10:21

@vroom321 I said exactly the same, what if that's your recently deceased relative's home they're slagging off? Nasty.

There's also no concern for the environment in the program, no mention of energy efficiency etc. Rip out the front garden and to hell with wildlife and increased flooding! You've covered your back yard in astroturf and plastic plants? Hooray! Profit! £££

vroom321 · 27/08/2022 11:10

I didn't like the plastic plants on the front garden on the couple from Dubai either.

Pemba · 28/08/2022 14:47

I quite liked it and found the presenters a refreshing change from Phil and Kirsty, who are becoming increasingly smug and annoying!

But I agree, why all the emphasis on 'making a profit', the people were all buying those houses to LIVE in FGS, presumably for several years, not to do a quick 'flip' and sell on straight away. Talking about the theoretical profits made by increased valuations seemed to be misleading people in today's market and uncertain times.

I suppose you should take into consideration that you may well move on sometime in the future though and think about what future buyers may want. Therefore not having any baths in the house, but two shower rooms seems a bit silly. It suited that family (single mum, teen kids) but what if they have visitors with young kids who need a bath? It's been shown to put off people from a house. Also, always a good idea to put in off road parking if you can, even if you don't need it yourself.

vroom321 · 28/08/2022 19:18

Yes even I thought surely a bath would be better for families. Was there a bath before I can't remember? It looked like a tight fit. Also the couple who wanted a third bedroom but the presenters advised them to move the bathroom upstairs and keep the one downstairs?

Pemba · 28/08/2022 19:33

I must have missed that one @vroom321 . Seems silly to reduce the number of bedrooms, surely that would definitely devalue the place? The single mum with the teenagers (I think? Was it in Liverpool?) there was a very small bathroom upstairs, can't remember if it had a bath, she was going to put one in there, but then decided space was too tight so just did a shower. Meanwhile downstairs there was room for another bathroom, so why not put a bath there, there seemed to be more space? But no, she went for a shower room again. If I'm remembering all that correctly.

I must say it does put me off when I'm browsing Rightmove if there are only shower rooms. It's just nice to have the option to use a bath.

Tinkerblonde1 · 28/08/2022 21:40

It didn't put my off buying my house. The market around here though is very aggressive lots of competiton so it may depend on the area.

LadyEloise1 · 31/08/2022 15:51

Last night's episode featured a lovely "cottage" near Swansea.
I didn't like the mismatched conservatory to the rest of the house's windows. Great idea to put a solid roof on it.
I hope they had an eat in kitchen. The dining table appeared to be at the end of the conservatory though.

Gemswaitingfoottap · 01/09/2022 09:35

I like the premise of it but the whole do this to add value rather than asking what would work for the family is annoying me. They are not flipping properties, they are investing in their homes. Not doing the drive was sensible considering she had clearly tapped her parents for the additional tens of thousands she needed to kit out her kitchen with high end appliances.

Also the trailer for next week's episode has already annoyed me with the male presenter saying horror house. That is someone's home. It is so disrespectful. I feel they are so detached from the process of making a home because they are always just renovating a house with no emotion in it as it is a business transaction.

elenacampana · 01/09/2022 09:43

I don’t understand the always talking about profit bit when the intention isn’t to sell a house, it’s to live in it.

I also agree with the comments about talking about the houses the way they do. The chances are that these were homes people had lived in a long time and were probably much loved before these two developers rocked up and started insulting everything in them!

Mooserp · 01/09/2022 09:54

Yeah, this week again at the end, when going to see the finished house they said something about increasing the value. It makes it really unclear what the USP of the show is meant to be!

I agree that the different colour window frames on the conservatory didn't look right, but it was really nice from the inside, looked like they had lovely views with the big windows. Funny how they made such a big deal about the great deal on the log burner, 20% off didn't seem that great.

vroom321 · 01/09/2022 09:54

Yes definitely think they are the wrong presenters for this show. Plenty of other programmes they could present.

CosmopolitanPlease · 01/09/2022 09:59

I thought the conservatory looked better before, it reminded me of a mobile classroom afterwards.

The little girl was super cute though.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/09/2022 11:17

The male presenter's bathroom ideas seemed ridiculous, DH is a plumber and he was shouting at the TV. Then when the owners did their own thing, he tried to take some credit for it!
