Marriage : SPOILER THREAD ONLY

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 20:52

This started on Sunday and has four parts.
I've watched all of them on bbc I player

Thought I'd start a spoiler thread as there are two threads already and spoilers not allowed over there. At all.

I wanted to like this, but it was disjointed at times and the last episode dragged.

It made some good points, but was just odd too. Not sure what to make of it really.
Jamie was just horrible

It’s so good. So many under currents. Love Sean Bean.

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 21:00

I liked the two actors and when she had a go at Jamie about the drugs I was cheering her on and Emily's dad too!
It was just a bit too slow for me and by the end I didn't really care what happened to any of them
It was different, I'll give it that

Oh it was baaaaad
He gave me the heebyjeebys and she just sort of sneers at everyone
Characters that went nowhere
Lots of time filling sitting in cars or just standing there looking gormless
My Daughter who came in with a cuppa for me said 'what the fuck is this'? 'It's shite but I'm sticking with it' I replied
In hindsight I wished I'd cleared my ironing pile
I hate ironing

SueSaid · 15/08/2022 21:04

I liked the first one, thought it laid ground well on how dysfunctional they are yet seem quite vulnerable too. I'm happy for spoilers so is it heart warming or heartbreaking? Iplayer playing up 🙄

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 21:07

What became of the leisure club worker and her boyfriend? Why show this in episode one then it was dropped ?
He really did smash up that Audi, I was cringing at this.
Dropping his trousers in front of his daughter and wife for a scratch in the kitchen was strange too. Nobody behaved normally.

I love sean bean and nicola walker, but he gave me predator vibes which was really unnerving? Like when he kept trying to touch his daughter, on the shoulder and knee, which she was uncomfortable with, I know it was meant to show he was just sad that she wasnt his little girl anymore and growing up etc but it came across as creepy after the leisure centre incidents.

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 21:14

It was meant to be heartbreaking I think , but it left me cold and I usually cry at anything remotely upsetting.
I think they both needed counseling.
Not dealt with the child's death at all even after twenty odd years ( or however old their adopted daughter was )
He was creepy around the daughter wasn't he?
Especially the trouser dropping episode

OP posts:
FunkedUp · 15/08/2022 21:40

I couldnt quite understand her rant re:drugs, it was way over the top and I thought maybe Nicolas had been a teen that had had a drug related death but no..... I was like well what was the point of the over the top rant

FunkedUp · 15/08/2022 21:41

I've repeated myself there, apologies. I'm still getting over how bad it was 🤣

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 21:44

Emma was clearly anti drugs
Rather than confront him in his hotel room she just saved it up for later
I thought it would transpire he had raped Emily too, but at least they didn't go down that route with her ( although that was bad enough )

Half way through episode 2 and I don't think I can make through to the end.

Please tell me the daughter dumped that God awful boyfriend!

AnyFucker · 15/08/2022 22:05

I enjoyed it. I know someone just like Emma.

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 22:05

Yes, the daughter left the boyfriend and found someone else!

Yes, the daughter left the boyfriend and found someone else!

I might keep watching just to see that gaslighting arsehole get his then!

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 22:33

Why did she tell her dad that they were going out to eat , but then they didn't and had take away instead ?
Did we ever find out why her brother wouldn't talk to her ? He wasn't seen anymore
What became of the broken locker ?
.. so many questions!

I have now watched all 4 and agree. So many threads of the storyline that never resurfaced. I found it strangely watchable but also just very odd. It feels like there needs to be an episode 5 to tie up all the loose ends and it feels like entire scenes were missing. I know I must be missing the point on this one as its obviously all been done that way for a reason (to make us question it) .

As a final observation- why are couples' beds in TV dramas always so small? That looked like a queen size! (If that's a small double)

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 15/08/2022 23:00

@the80sweregreat yes. The brother! The gym assistant and a few more. And so so much nervous laughter. It was toe curling (again I know that was probably the point)

I think they were making the point that it was too late to go out dinner as she had been seeing to her Dad.

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2022 06:47

It was just sad really. They had rebuilt their lives and adopted a child ( not an easy process ) and they both worked and had a nice home ,but coming to terms with what happened with Nicholas was never really addressed. I felt that they had never really moved on ( which is understandable) they could have done with some professional help maybe?
It did make me smile that the daughter was keen to get her to open up a bit, but when they told her they had never liked her horrible ex she didn't like it ! A typical reaction.

I really really enjoyed it. It was very different from other Dramas. There were lots of potentially big story lines that never really went anywhere, but I think that was the point. That is what life is like.

I loved the little snapshots into other characters' lives such as the lady at the gym and the lady doing the interview. We knew why she was distracted in the interview but Ian did not.

I felt sorry for Ian. He had been made redundant, he was clearly lonely, trying to reach out to others and coming across às a bit creepy as a result. His wife (despite her hideous boss) seemed to really enjoy her work.

I thought the quiet scenes where they watched TV, washed up etc were mesmerising.

I did find it odd that the house was so quiet. No radio on etc.

I'd love another series so we can follow their lives for a little longer.

I just really enjoyed the no drama of this drama. Seems I'm in the minority though!

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2022 07:33

Why did he keep hearing things too ? He switched off the drier , heard nothing then turned it on again. I heard a noise ; I wondered if someone was living in their loft ; might have livened things up!
He was outside at one point too after hearing something as well.

He was also a bit tight with money too. She had to justify the new jacket ( it was half price in the sale ) the bread maker he bought was a cheaper one. He had the same jacket from the 80s , an older car , she was hesitating over 3 pounds for the avocado and he moaned about the ketchup price at the airport. If had you got me a the jacket potato, then you could have saved on the sauce! Making them get the pound out of the broken locker ( which I get, but he did make a fuss)
The holiday with the redundancy money was probably her idea.
He had only just lost his job, his mum's place was going to be sold on I assume ( so inheritance coming there ) but he was still careful. Not really a criticism, many people are like this etc , but just another controlling mechanism for him to hold over her and she still had her job too.
I'm surprised cctv didn't pick up on him smashing up Jamie's car. That was shocking really .

It's really quiet in my house this week as the DDs are away so it's just me. I was going around the kitchen earlier on doing the mundane tasks; emptying the dishwasher, wiping the surfaces etc and I suddenly thought 'oh know I feel like I'm THEM' so I quickly switched the radio on.

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2022 09:41

I've just seen an article in the daily Mail that people are very bored with this drama.
Some of the comments made me laugh though.
' I'd rather watch the security camera of my back gate.'

I said to Dh it wasn't his kind of thing ( nobody is shot , no fast cars or any action )
He didn't like 'mum' much either. He Found Kelly annoying in that.

The ' revitalizing ' shower gel hunting at the shop did make me laugh !
Especially when the assistant went to ask his manager and he mumbled ' I've had enough of this' or something!
He didn't give up did he?

Still finding it a tedious watch on episode 4 at the start now. I dislike all if the characters. The daughter is quite rude ignoring her Dad. The boss seems weird thinking Nicola waters is beautiful, no offence nicola, but to me she looks like a grumpy potato, Bean is scary with his weird nervous way of talking. All very strange.
