I think the writers don't know what to do about Emily. The actress took a break 2 or 3 years ago, and hasn't returned. I suppose the character won't be killed off as it would distress the actress, but there is no sign of her returning.

Spider and Freda aren’t related. Spider is Emily’s brother’s son, whereas Freda is Ernest Bishop’s niece.
