Beggars belief that this is true.

How did they think this build a bear murder plan wouldn't arouse suspicion

He entirely got away with it if he hadn't confessed years later

LaurieFairyCake · 27/06/2022 20:24

I no was surprised I hadn't seen or heard of the series before, I thought I'd seen all of James Nesbitts drama

I have to say he was abhorrently brilliant in it - he really made himself look ugly in it to suit the character - cold, manipulative- he was bloody brilliant

LaurieFairyCake · 27/06/2022 20:24

We watched the whole thing yesterday Grin

ToffeeNotCoffee · 27/06/2022 20:44

Saw it on t.v. some years ago. James Nesbitt spoke to some of the victims' families. He says he really was not comfortable playing the role.

The dentist was injecting his affair partner with relaxing drugs (with her consent) to make her more ready for sex !

cottagegardenflower · 27/06/2022 20:48

What's it called?

cottagegardenflower · 27/06/2022 20:49

Sorry. The secret!

Ticktockbigclock · 27/06/2022 21:04

I was shocked Hazel got so long in prison. Her kids seemed supportive too! She killed their dad!

TheCraicDealer · 27/06/2022 21:17

Watched it with my parents when it came out, that was grim during the shagging bits. Mum and dad thought the retro NI parts were well done though.

It was ripe for a drama adaption, such an unbelievable story. His relationship with both women and how his “faith” didn’t stop so much of his behaviour (multiple abortions, cheating, murder, sexually assaulting unconcious patients ffs) plus his dramatic confession is stranger than fiction. He really did think he was entitled to behave the way he did.

Still can’t believe Hazel’s kids and latest husband have stood by her.

Welcome to Ulster where the police believe that an ‘unfaithful couple’ would take their own lives this compounding their sin, than look at the spouses and ask real questions. Religious fundamentalism has a lot to answer for.

ComfyChairPose · 27/06/2022 21:33

3 episodes in, he loved the status of being a leader at the church. He couldn't lose that status. He wasn't christian at all. He committed a Double murder without batting an eyelid. But he was devastated when the church elders wanted him to go to a different church group.

Yeh, this was horrible. I can't work out how guilty or innocent Hazel is.

She overrode her own revulsion to the situation to allow him to inject her with drugs to make her disregard her reaction. That sounds so like an abuse victim. Maybe this is why her adult dc and new husband are behind her

I saw this a few years ago. It was utterly bloodcurdling. Something about the everyday, suburban decor and situation made it all the more horrific; as if it may have been in your neighbours' house.

I was punching the air with joy when he was scammed, and then when they both were convicted. Hazel would likely never have been a murderer without him, but she agreed to the plan and didn't try to call it off. She didn't warn her husband. Didn't phone the police or alert a neighbour when dentist was on his way to kill her husband. Didn't ask him to stop or try to intervene and save Trevor. She got everything she deserved.

flapjackfairy · 29/06/2022 07:58

I was aghast at the second wife brushing it under the carpet and being happy for her and her kids to live with a double murderer !

Yes, if hazel had said she thought he was only fantasing until he turned up with his poor dead wife in the boot, if at that point she'd said no go home. It was strange.

I have been subject to coercive control but her own husband wasnt the abuser.

He wasnt thrilled with her but he would have protected her from howell

Well he actually got away with it till he confessed so...

ComfyChairPose · 29/06/2022 11:15

Be only confessed to bring down hazel qnd kyle. They were more emotionally stable so he ripped the rug from under them. I know kyle told him to confess, but he did it for glory and attention i think. To please kyle and bring down hazel. All about generating reactions in other people.

A true narcissist.

His eldest son who committedsuicide, do you think he knew? Sad for him

I've just finished it. It was really good! I can't believe they got away with it for so long. He was a monster, but the mistress wasn't any better. Even when being interviewed by the police she was still lying and changing her story. Pretending she was coerced.

ParanoidGynodroid · 29/06/2022 14:57

I thought it was an accident? But who knows. I hadn't considered that he may have known... maybe he overheard something; or perhaps his father confessed to him, too.
It was remarkable how Howell was getting upset and concerning himself with how long his son knew he was going to die for... no consideration for those horrific last seconds of his victims. Nor for the grief of his children for their mother.
Evil scum.

Trivester · 29/06/2022 20:45

Nesbitt was brilliant; chillingly repulsive.

The moment when Hazel unkinked the hose ! It was such a banal and automatic thing to do, but was literally the difference between life and death. I wonder if that actually happened.

Cleebope2 · 05/07/2022 17:51

Just finished it last night. I was aware of the story when it happened. To watch it knowing it was all true was mesmerising and horrifying. Nesbitt and his family knew some of those involved. Truth is more chilling than fiction. No cliches in this drama, it was excellent at exposing the hypocrisy in society and in some religious institutions.

TreePoser · 05/07/2022 20:16

yes it makes a total mockery of ''faith''.

It was the status he couldn't bear to lose.
My grandmother was from a baptist family apparently although she didn't try to raise her children baptist.

KittytheHare · 05/07/2022 20:19

Loved this show. I remember the actual case really well. So chilling
