Bea Arthur left the show in the end because she couldn't take any more scripts about how ugly she apparently was.

I don't understand it at all. Tall, slender, very Greek pillar look about her. Very striking. Beautiful.

I would understand if they just wrote her character as finding it hard to meet men, maybe because they're a bit scared of her capability and wit, but how can they have written her as ugly?

As for Blanche, yes, I'll be as fat as she is, please.

She was the most striking in my opinion, and glamorous and elegant. I don't remember much about her being called ugly, apart from by her mother who used to make fun of them all, but didn't really mean it.

I've just looked her up and hadn't realised she died so long ago - 2009.

There are quite a lot of lines about how unattractive she is, and not just from Sophia.

Thinking about it, I wonder if instead of being ugly, they meant she was "mannish"...being so tall, not excessively curvy and with a throaty voice. Still stupid though. She didn't look or sound anything like a man!
