On holiday abroad and just heard. He seemed such a nice guy. What horrible news. RIP.

Me too. He was one of those people you felt you knew, even though I'd never met him. Poor Amy tonight, she was devastated. Thinking of his wife, family and friends. RIP Harry, you'll be so missed.

Snuffy28 · 24/06/2022 23:04

Just to add, I'm surprised that no one else has commented. He wasn't a national figure, but Yorkshire is a big place and surely many Mumsnetters from the north have heard of him.

Maxifly · 24/06/2022 23:09

Northerner here. Just heard the news, shocked and saddened. Met him twice, he joined our little band of neighbours campaigning over trees to be cut down by the council. Such a lovely bloke. Too young to go...

TullyApplebottom · 24/06/2022 23:10

A Yorkshire institution. Very sad.

Ionianprincess · 24/06/2022 23:13

Very sad and his youngest child is only 2

Confuzzlediddled · 24/06/2022 23:14

Very sad 🥺

Sectordle · 24/06/2022 23:33

I’m also feeling sad. He really wasn’t that old.

PeasInOurTime · 24/06/2022 23:41

Really sad news. And the announcement at the end of tea time Look North, I thought she did really well as she was clearly devastated.

GuiltyPleasure · 25/06/2022 00:17

It's very sad. He was such a massive part of local tv news and sport in this area. I remember being really moved when he was so emotional doing his retirement segment on Look North, just a couple of years ago.
DH knew him vaguely as a member of the village cricket team where we lived. He didn't play, but often walked his dogs up to the pitch to cheer them on. He seemed a lovely man.
Watching Look North, tonight, I felt so sad for Amy having to announce it. As his most recent co-presenter & obvious close friend, she was clearly devastated.
RIP Harry

I'm in Sussex and remember him as he presented South Today for a few years. Sad news.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 25/06/2022 01:30

I think he was wonderful. Part of the fabric of local TV news for so long, with such a reassuring presence.

I didn’t know he ever left Yorkshire!
I remember years ago him playing the straight man to J Clarkson on top gear doing a bunch of daft stunts with a robin reliant. He was brilliant, so funny.

Arenanewbie · 25/06/2022 09:06

Yes, it’s very sad, too early. I never met him personally, just saw on the news but he was also involved in a couple of local projects and did a lot of good.
RIP Harry.

LosingTheWill2022 · 25/06/2022 09:11

I lived in Sheffield throughout the 80s and I remember him clearly from Look North. I honestly couldn't name anyone else but could name Harry Gration. Very sad for his young family.

warofthemonstertrucks · 25/06/2022 09:13

Me too. I grew up in north Derbyshire and he was the face of local tv news for me-I always liked watching him when I went home to my parents-and I found it cry comforting when he did the news. Really sad.

RampantIvy · 25/06/2022 09:14

I have just read it on my FB feed. Dan Jarvis has posted about it. I saw him when he came through our villages doing his 3 legged walk with Paul Hudson. The local primary school was allowed out to line the street to cheer them on.

RIP.

RedRec · 25/06/2022 09:24

I moved to Yorkshire from the south in 2013 and was very, very homesick for ages. Harry came to feel like a friend on Look North and I was really shocked and sad to hear the news last night.

TheDoveFromAboveCooCoo · 25/06/2022 10:10

He seemed such a lovely man. He was on Look North for my entire life and I (like many others) felt like I actually knew him. He was like part of the family.

I feel so sad for his family. And yes Amy brought me to tears too.

They are doing a special tribute show next week so no doubt I will be in tears at that too.

Playplayaway · 25/06/2022 17:10

I remember him on South Today with Sally Taylor.

Lastonetotango · 25/06/2022 17:18

He seemed a really decent bloke, I met him a few times. Amy did really well with the announcement, she was devastated. It brought tears to my eyes.

Libertybear80 · 25/06/2022 17:47

I liked Harry but surely if your 71 your past your years to be having a 2 year old!!

Yorkshirebornandbread · 27/06/2022 18:52

Thank you OP for this tribute thread. Just watching the Look North tribute now, he will be missed so much. May he rest in peace.

Susiesoap7 · 06/07/2022 19:37

Very sad news

itsnotmeitsu · 11/07/2022 21:37

Saw himshopping in our local Tesco once and would sometimes see him jogging in the area. On Saturday somebody in our local mentioned it, because he'd chatted to him a couple of times about a particular interest of his, and said how nice he was. Seems like he was one of those who was actually the same offscreen as onscreen; in other words a genuinely nice person.
