This is Us - how did they film it?

Late to the This is Us party but now obsesssed. Part way through season 2 so please NO SPOILERS

however, it strikes me that given all the going back and forward in time and the fact that the child actors are all obviously the same age in the segments from the past, not to mention the hair , makeup etc for the adults, they must have filmed the story essentially in chronological order and then cleverly edited it afterwards to create the series.

Has anyone else thought this, or are there any articles that explain the production process (I have searched but can’t find anything on this aspect)

No they filmed each season although there is something in the last season that they filmed a few years before so the kids hadn’t aged but you can tell the different era kids get a little older each season

I absolutely love This is Us. The writing is so clever and the filming was genius.

They must have known near the beginning of filming what the storylines in the final episodes would be because they were filmed when the show first started.

As I say so very clever and brilliant series.

I’m with you @dragonDan - there must have been a lot of pre planning - for example the fantasy scenes of William being involved in family christmasses etc with the child actors that is only shown late into the second season. They must have been very confident that it would be recommissioned or shot those easily series very close together because child actors change so quickly (see Stranger Things as an example!!)

I'm with you op, late to the party. I'm party way through season 3 but don't mind spoilers (usually). I've read in the final they filmed parts years ago and just said to the actors, including the kids 'you need to film a few extra scenes today, it won't make sense and may not ever be shown but just trust us'.

I can't believe I've not been aware of this show before now, it's totally up my street!
