Did anyone else watch this last night ?

It was good. However, the girl called Georgina who was the result of her mother's holiday fling in Portugal 35 years ago did not get to meet her Dad. I suspect he does not want to have to explain himself.

Was it me or did her mother, Maura, think it was all something of a jape ? On her own admission, 'I went on holiday and didn't know I was pregnant until I got home.' She seemed to think it was a giggle both then and now.

Her mother knew who the father was but, it seemed to me, just wanted her daughter all to herself when she was growing up. Her mother didn't seem that bothered that the daughter had questions and never knew her father.

I'm sure she did what she thought was the best thing at the time. It's easy to be judgmental looking at it from the outside and judging her actions 30 years on.

I think the mum had a sixth sense that the dad would reject them (perhaps he was already married with children), and wanted to protect herself.

I suspect if Maura had believed the dad would have wanted to be involved, and loved her, she would have tried to get in touch as soon as she found out she was pregnant.

The mum gave her daughter the facts, and it was probably the result she was expecting. I think it was a good thing Georgina got in touch, it means her Dad now knows she's alive. If he changes his mind, then he can make contact again. In my mind these things are better in the open, but I can also understand Maura not wanting to deal with the rejection when she found out she was pregnant.

P. S. People are often light hearted and jokey, when dealing with something quite emotional and heavy. It's a coping mechanism.

I just felt that the father probably had lots of flings with holidaymakers and didn't want the responsibility of a child with Maura. She probably knew that. He possibly / probably had another family and it would upset his family if it all came out.
But he's missing out on meeting his lovely daughter and grandchildren.

No,I didn't get that impression at all. You have to remember that back then it would've been really hard to contact him as well which adds another difficulty to the mix.
