Last Chance U - Need to discuss!

Has anyone else been watching Last Chance U (football and/or basketball)?

I have just finished the 5th season of the football series and I'm so heartbroken by some of those boys' stories, especially knowing that most of them did nothing with the "last chance" they were given or were totally screwed over by the coaches.

On the topic of coaches... Buddy Stephens at EMCC appears to be a horrid person who doesn't care about his players injuries, BUT he is clearly a good coach given his impressive record of National titles and his recruitment is fantastic. He also produced a number of real NFL players and many many of his kids go to D1 schools. Season 1 was fantastic with Britney Wagner and Ronald Ollie is an unbelievable success story given how far beyond help he looked.

However, the Independence coach Jason Brown was an actual fraud and I felt sooo sorry for the kids there. He destroyed so many of their careers. He had no idea what he was doing and just abused his players and staff all day long! Wtf was that all about?! It's obvious that the players knew he was an absolute dumbass and just ignored/pretended to tolerate him. The season they were winning was purely down to Malik Henry and Rakeem Boyd and possibly Carlos Thomson who carried that team on their backs and completely ignored his incompetent "instructions" (just abuse). They just did their own thing and I felt so sorry for Malik who was clearly very intelligent and simply couldn't stomach him. As soon as they left, the team completely fell apart. He should not be allowed to coach!! It's a miracle he managed not to cripple Jermaine Johnson's career like he did with the other kids.

The Lanley coach in season 5 John Beam was such a contrast! How amazing was he?! He clearly knew what he was doing and was so compassionate to his players who all respected him. He just had a weak offensive team and no quarterback because those were all in-state kids, but he did a superb job with what he had. I did feel incredibly sorry for RJ though. Poor guy was SO hard-working and lovely and no one cared about him. 😥

I also loved the Basketball coach. Again, very compassionate and clearly cares about his players unlike Jason Brown!!!

I struggled with the football version and need to revisit.

Loved the basketball one, the coach was so skilled at coaching a team of individuals. He could bring out the best in all of them.

Also, in the Independence college (Season 4 in particular) how terrible was the head of the medical team Rachel?!?! She let a player with clearly a serious concussion who couldn't squeeze her hand back on the field to play!!! 🤕 And it was totally her fault the quarterback was injured in the very first game, as she cleared him to please Jason Brown knowing that he had a hamstring injury.

I LOVED season 1 of the football version with Britney Wagner as the academic advisor. And some of those kids actually play in the NFL now.

I didn't like Season 2 of EMCC, but the two Independence seasons I watched just with utter disbelief/disgust at the coach Jason Brown. He is really disgusting beyond belief.

Season 5 (Lanley) I thought was really good.

But I agree the basketball 🏀 coach and series was great.

The basketball Last Chance U will get a Season 2. Yay! It's such a shame Covid ruined their season in Season 1. I thought they definitely had a shot to win state. I don't think any of the guys made it to the NBA, did they?

The football Last Chance U will get a Season 6 I think, but it's rumoured to be a spin off. I am not on top of the NFL drafting, but as far as I know Dakota Allen, C.J. Reavis and Jermaine Johnson II were all drafted by the NFL, with Jermaine Johnson being a first round pick. A few other guys, including John Franklin III also made it to the NFL by signing as undrafted free agents. Ronald Ollie also went pro.

And it's still early days but I think the Season 5 Lanley College defensive line brothers Rejzohn Wright and his older brother probably have a shot at making it to the NFL. Rejzohn was a real star. I have no idea what he was doing at JUCO level.

I realise I'm talking to myself 🤪but I'm still hoping more fans of the show will want to discuss.

The problem with the Basketball 🏀 version of Last Chance U is that it's almost impossible to make it to the NBA from JUCO/even a D1 college whereas many of the football 🏉 are really just one good break away from an NFL draft.

Continuing talking to myself 😆

I don't understand why Season 1 (the second Independence season) didn't focus on Jermaine Johnson who was the only player worth his salt there and is the highest NFL draft pick of all the Last Chance U alumni. Instead, the focused on the utterly hopeless Bobby Bruce who not only was a complete idiot, but he was too small and skinny to ever make it to the NFL. He was also a total moron.

I also watched All or Nothing (Season 1 - the Michigan Wolverines season) and the contrast in coaching is night and day!!! A truly great coach at the best D1 program in the country. Despite the Wolverines' losing season and clear QB mistakes, the never abuses anyone or even swears at his players and they all respect him and there is no rebellion at all.

I guess he had guys like Rashad Gerry who maintained a 4.0 GPA and was an absolute superstar on the field whereas coach Jason Brown had guys that were failing Art (😂), smoking weed and stealing from dorm rooms. But still Jason Brown is not a real football coach.

There's a series on appleTV you might like Swagger, it's a fictional basketball series and pretty good.
