They do all this painstaking geophys and radar and stuff, and all the hairy people get excited about what looks JUST LIKE a temple, and there's a town and all sorts.

What do they choose to excavate first? A ditch. A sodding ancient ditch.

So, in essence, they're digging a ditch... in a ditch.

Ditches is where things got thrown, though. So there's actually more chance of finding things and hence dating the last use of the ditch.

Not great telly, but sound archaeology.

they probs do it so that if there IS stuff there, they dont damage it in the initial excavation.
