Pam and Tommy

Just finished watching this on Disney plus. It was way better than I was expecting- actually very. very funny, but with some really sad poignant moments. I kind of fell in love with them both as a couple and I really liked the way they portrayed the misogyny of the sex tape and its different effects on them both. Eg, Tommy got congratulated wherever he went whereas Pam was made to feel, in her own words, "like a slut". Great series.

Loved it. Totally agree about the gender equality aspect.

And I never really thought about how awful that must have been for her. I was a child in the 90s so it bypassed me when it was happening.

I loved the acting they were fabulous

Have you seen The Dirt about Motley Crue? Another good one

Discovereads · 02/05/2022 08:17

I really liked it too. I thought it addressed the impact on Pam very sensitively. And you can see how it essentially cancelled her and ruined her acting career.

The 90s was more sexist and slut shaming compared to today and often people just don’t realise that. After all, a 2007 leaked sex tape was the basis of Kim Khardashians entire career. It propelled her to stardom.

Pams tape was simply the first one and so had the shock effect and over a decade too early for social compassion as it came out in 1993. I felt really sorry for both of them in that the stress of it all affected their relationship. And even today, they say the other was the love of their life.

Nope. Refuse to watch it.
It perpetuates the horror for Pamela Anderson
The tape being released was against her wishes- I wonder if the series was given her green light?

No, Pam Anderson was contacted many times and refused to comment throughout the whole process of making the series from what I understand. So definitely not a green light. I can understand her not wanting to dig up old trauma. But it was a historical event and I think the series did a good job portraying the agony that was heaped on her and how she was the innocent victim in all of it.

Agree. TV dramatisations have been made out of plenty of traumatic events including murders (eg the McCann documentary), Fred West trial, Covid nursing home deaths, the murder of Rhys Jones, the death of princess Diana etc....

I thought this was handled very well with sensitivity and I really enjoyed it

I really enjoyed it & didn't realise how the tape was obtained, the impact on Pam etc (I was a tween/teen). Plus it was funny.

plinkyy · 02/05/2022 08:40

Personally I think it showed Pamela in a sympathetic light & made me relook at the situation again. As other pp said my experience was that a sex tale propels you to stardom eg Paris, Kim.

I had no idea either- I always thought they released it on purpose for money. I was a teen in the 90s so had no idea. Its horrific that it was stolen from them and by all accounts it actually seems like it documents two people who really were very much in love at the time- so quite sweet and not sleazy at all

She was incredible. Massive props to her for portraying Pam so sensitively without becoming a caricature which is a danger with roles like that

Lily James looked so much like Pam! Incredible. Loved the episode that went back to when she was discovered at the sports game.

The dirt is on Netflix! Amazing!
