Place marking for when I finish work. I binged all 4 on Sunday night 😳

the80sweregreat · 19/04/2022 13:55

I found this very moving to be honest as it became more about her and less about him
I shed a tear too.
What they did was truly awful , but she paid the price a lot more than he did.
I'm not sure I could forgive my parents though. They both must struggle so much with it all.
I wish they had shown her learning IT ( I read on line that she did several courses in prison )

I cried at the end too. I rarely cry at any thing, but I properly sobbed. Not even sure why.
I really enjoyed this. Such a bizarre story.

RoyKentsChestHair · 19/04/2022 14:13

I remember it at the time and it was such a weird story - wouldn’t have believed it if it wasn’t true! And yes, I actually felt for her, as she’d gone along with his stupid plan and he was clearly shown to be coercive, and then ended up coming out of it worse off then he did.

Tlollj · 19/04/2022 14:23

She received a longer jail sentence than he did. Funny set up altogether with the house next door too.

the80sweregreat · 19/04/2022 14:41

If he hadn't bought the house next door then maybe he would have thought twice? Not so easy to go 'missing ' when you've nowhere to live. Plus he obviously couldn't be someone who could live on his own.
If you believe her, or not, it's not hard to see how someone could control somebody to do this. He kept on at her to do things with threats and blackmail :(
She should have stood up to him more , but she just couldn't.
I'm not condoning her actions, but I could see how it could happen. Or maybe I'm just a soft touch in my dotage!
It's made me think about relationships though and why people do things.

I remember it vividly at the time when he turned up with ‘amnesia’ and have followed the various articles in the media since.
Didn’t the Mirror say it was a general member of the public who found the photo online? I think the reporter liked Anne in the end. I felt sorry for the boys that they were suspected being in on it for a while.
In real life do you think Anne was as weak and insipid as she was in the drama? He was horrible - always putting her down - there was one scene in Panama and she spoke in Spanish and he mocked her. What she did was dreadful but I think it is very telling that she is reconciled with her children (if media reports are true) and he is with a much younger phillopino wife. I think he is still as deluded as he was then.
More and more of his colleagues are coming out and saying they saw him around town and knew he wasn’t dead! Just blows my mind that they got away with it for so long

AutumnOrange · 19/04/2022 16:42

The police officer who questioned Anne - wasn’t he in The Bill?
I think she was given a harsh sentence and he manipulated her. But also she was willing to risk losing her sons rather than losing her husband even though he cheated on her and was irresponsible with money. Wonder what her childhood was like to be so pliable like that

AlternativePerspective · 19/04/2022 17:01

She was the bigger perpetrator though, because she was the one who was going to claim on his insurance. And had they not been found out then she would have benefited financially, and who knows, maybe she would even have pissed off with the cash at that point. She could easily have done and claimed ignorance if he came back.

It’s so easy to play the victim in these situations “he made me do it/was controlling” etc, but if they hadn’t been caught she would no doubt have cashed in.

I don’t think she was a victim by any stretch.

AutumnOrange · 19/04/2022 17:11

True. So why didn’t she keep the insurance and ignore his calls? He had a hold on her.
But then she lied to her sons everyday.
My mum died suddenly when I was a teenager and much as I miss her and would love for her to knock on my door - I don’t think that I could get passed the betrayal if she had faked it and my dad was in on it. Watching me cry.
Watching Canoe Man on iPlayer at the moment and it’s very different - she is less meek but he is still the driving force.

AutumnOrange · 19/04/2022 17:13

I know it was 20yrs ago but why didn’t the police check phone records or bank accounts yet lifted up toilet seats in the house?
Also, there is a lot of use of telephone boxes - did we really still use them as recently as 20 years ago?

the80sweregreat · 19/04/2022 17:21

I remember a BT telephone box outside my old house 20 years ago and almost daily it was vandalized ( especially in the school holidays ) and eventually they took it down
I used to report it to the police and was told ' nothing we can do 'no wonder they became almost extinct.
It's weird that the neighbours didn't say anything , I bet my neighbour would be delighted to dob me in! ..
Maybe the neighbours thought ' the insurance won't pay out ' or just didn't want to get involved? It is odd, but people are reluctant to poke their noses in I suppose ? Or just didn't think he would be capable of doing something like this?

Where are people watching all episodes? I can't find them on SKY

Wilma55 · 19/04/2022 17:26

Itv hub

bilbodog · 19/04/2022 17:29

Its on ITV hub

AutumnOrange · 19/04/2022 17:32

How did Anne not have 1 photo of her husband and everyone accepted it?
Not even their wedding photo? And how did he get declared so quickly?!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/04/2022 17:34

@Wilma55

Itv hub
Not on my box it isn't. How odd.
AutumnOrange · 19/04/2022 17:39

That’s strange - all 4 episodes appeared on my itv hub within a few minutes of the 1st episode!
The iPlayer programme shows them as both being a lot more feisty- him even more of an arsehole and her even more involved and complicit.

the80sweregreat · 19/04/2022 17:58

It's on ITV hub , but I had to suffer the ads

Were loving this drama, watched the first 3 episodes last night, just one more to go tonight!

Did anyone else see the interview with the journalist on This Morning today?

the80sweregreat · 19/04/2022 18:32

I didn't see this morning, but wished I had !
The journalist comes across well in this I think.
Quite understanding and nice.
