I never watched it first time around. dh have got it out on video and god it's fab. don't spoil anything - I've read it but can't remember much. all we've had so far is an episode swanning round oxford, one at Brideshead and one in Venice. nothing has happned yet it's wonderful.

Anthony Andrews is so pretty in that. Swanning round Oxford, Brideshead and Venice is pretty much all that does happen, iirc.

TellusMater · 08/01/2008 22:56

DH bought me the DVDs for my birthday a few years ago. I love it. There is much swanning and later much repressed emotion

Tommy · 08/01/2008 22:56

fantastic series - I think the Daily Mail are gving it away on DVD at the moment, in installments whihc would be great but would mean I'd have to buy the DM so obviously I can't.

I loved it - and watched repeats on UKDrama or something when I was pregnant with DS3 I think.

Enjoy

SorenLorensen · 08/01/2008 22:56

I think they swan around on a boat too (it's a long time since I saw it). But yes, swanning around is pretty much the order of the day.

Tommy · 08/01/2008 22:57

it's fantastic!

Enjoy

hatwoman · 08/01/2008 22:57

I agree AA is wonderful. it's all so beautiful.

sorry about that - something went a bit wobbll and I thought I'd lost my post and couldn't be bothered to type it all again

Tommy · 08/01/2008 22:58

a bit wobbly.... (again)

I must go to bed...

Clary · 08/01/2008 23:00

Ah yes it's fab.
How old are you then hatwoman (sorry, had blithely assumed you to be older than you must be)

(oops don't mean to be rude - you just always sound so wise and knowledgeable )

Jeremy Irons is fab, Anthony Andrews a bit bleurgh in retrospect tho in my 6th form common room we all swooned over him. Diana Quick as Julia as well.

It's quite slow tho, isn't it. Watched some of it on TV a bit ago and thought hmmm...every i dotted there.

Tommy hilarious anecdote about Daily Mail hard sell on Brideshead on a thread from twiglett I think...

Clary · 08/01/2008 23:02

no sorry is was CountessDracula here

hatwoman · 08/01/2008 23:05

hmmm. not sure how to take that clary. how old did you think I was? go I dare yer...

Clary · 08/01/2008 23:10

well hat you can work out in a trice how old I am from my 6th form comment.

I guess I had you in yr 30s (which would make you watchign Brideshead as a 10yo hmm) just because I often agree/chime in with yr views and people I do that with are usually nearer my age than you obviously are....

hatwoman · 08/01/2008 23:13

can't work it out - coz I don't know when brideshead came out. but i am indeed in my 30s. dh tells me it was 81 - if you were in the sixthform I was a snotty first year.

OP posts:
hatwoman · 08/01/2008 23:15

we were nearly put off by the Daily Mail business. we'd decided to get it out indpendepntly. that was such good spelling i can;t be bothered to change it

Candlewax · 08/01/2008 23:15

I remember it the first time round. I was addicted. I must have been youngish as I had not understood the gay implications... I was just in love with AA.

PrismManchip · 08/01/2008 23:17

I love it but am much too young (well a bit too young) to have seen it on tv. I read the book when i was 15, it transported me away from my tedious highland village fucked up life quite nicely.

Clary · 08/01/2008 23:20

Ah yes hat that's right, I was in 6th form in 81-82, OK well you are about as old as I thought.

I guess first years as they were then wouldn't watch Brideshead, would they?

At least you were alive tho. At work t'other day a couple of colleagues were talking about doing a story about a new film of Brideshead; I said, oh don't forget to mention the iconic TV version, y'know, with Anthony Andrews and Jeermy Irons...got toally blank looks from two people who were not even born in 1981

hatwoman · 08/01/2008 23:22

I am deeply suspicious of people who weren't born in 1981. it's just not right.

I managed to read the whole book without getting the gay bit. nor the catholic bit.

OP posts:
Clary · 08/01/2008 23:29

It's depressing isn't it (the 1981 thing, not the gay/catholic bit of Brideshead)

1981 wasn't that long ago, in my head...

thirdwisearticmonkey · 11/01/2008 22:58

I absolutely lurve this. Had it on video for years, then got it on DVD. Anthony Andrews was gorgeous in it. Might have to dig it out - sigh

scatterbrain · 11/01/2008 23:06

My all time fave thing is Brideshead - I just loved Aloysius the bear ! Sebastian was just so very lovely !

Also couldn't bear to buy the DM to get the free DVDs though - will buy it instead ! Have it on video but no VCR anymore - D'Oh !

alfiesbabe · 12/01/2008 15:07

I was in my first year at Uni when it was first on. Of course those were the days when to watch telly, you had to go to the relevant TV lounge (there was a BBC1, a BBC2 and an ITV lounge!!) I remember it being standing room only for Brideshead. I used to go with my best mate - I'd lech at Anthony Andrews and she'd lech at jeremy Irons. Those were the days.... I expect students all sit in their rooms watching stuff on their laptops these days. Very convenient, but I can't help thinking they're missing out somehow...

oxocube · 12/01/2008 16:06

I sit and watch this on my laptop, all alone in my little study, with a glass of wine or two and a nice fluffy blanket In fact, may do so tonight as telly is shite as usual

oxocube · 12/01/2008 16:08

Actually, I lost my virginity to Brideshead (well after watching an episode of and drinking my then)boyfriend's parents asti which he told me was champagne I was obviously transported by the romance of it all as he was a bit of a t**t actually!

hatwoman · 12/01/2008 16:36

alfiesbabe - your uni was luxurious! I was there some years after Brideshead and we had one telly room. as far as I remember it only ever got used for soaps (Neighbours primarily) so there was never much arguing about which channel. it was part of the day. get up. go and have lunch. go and watch neighbours over a few fags.
