My youngest is making his way through watching all seasons of Friends. I have been watching some with him.

It reminds me of being in my 20's when we watched it all the time. And it's nice to sit with him and watch sometimes. They are quite funny.

But jeez it's sexist. And the women frequently have their nipples sticking out! Something I didn't notice before. Did no one wear bras back then?!

I think the prudishness around women’s nipples when men’s nipples are free to be out and proud is not a good thing. Free the nips.

Otherwise, I still love it, it was of its time and while some jokes haven’t aged well, it makes me a bit sad when people slag it off based on today’s standards. It was and still is great.

Jennifer Anniston was (a bit weirdly) asked about her nipples a few years ago:
“"Yeah I don't know what to say about that!" Jennifer said. "It's just one of those things, I guess. I wear a bra. I don't know what to tell ya! And I don't know why I'm supposed to be ashamed of them - it's just the way my breasts are.””

OFAH is also terribly racist, I do think you do have to take any sort of television show or film in the context of the time it was shown in. Some things are pretty progressive, considering (the gay marriage, for instance.)

flyingdream · 22/03/2022 07:20

I doubt she wore a bra at the time!

I don't get the comparison. I still feel the same (uncomfortable) if I see men's nipples sticking out like that too.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 22/03/2022 07:59

But the mens nips weren't sticking out.

I heard somewhere that they taped m&ms to the front of their bras to create the effect for filming… Now who decided that was necessary/desirable is an interesting question…

TeaStory · 22/03/2022 08:10

The nipple thing was fashionable at the time, I remember seeing fake nipples for sale to get the effect.

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 22/03/2022 08:14

I don't remember noticing it on them at the time. So maybe there were just nips all over the place then 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've only just watched this. My DS's used to watch it whilst I was cooking dinner. I had no clue, as it was on at about 6Grin It didn't do them any harm, but I think Matt Le Blanc ruined a potential big career by playing a sex-mad glutton and dim-wit for 10 years. Good show.

GrandTheftWalrus · 23/03/2022 01:43

She wore a bra when she was trying to sleep with joey

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 23/03/2022 01:48

You could see Chandler’s nipples in his interview shirt. Just two though 😉

On SATC Samantha had some of those and one of the others tried them (I think Miranda) and they got her a lot of attention!

M&Ms?

About as much use as a chocolate teapot, I’d have thought……

SoletstalkaboutBruno · 23/03/2022 07:58

Peanuts don’t melt?!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 23/03/2022 08:35

Yep nips ahoy was definitely the fashion. Though I think in the earlier seasons it wasn't as bad - the very skimpy clothing came in for the later seasons I think.

NurseBernard · 23/03/2022 08:43

M&Ms are chocolate and candy.

Peanuts are … peanuts.
