Spoilers ;
Anyone watched it all ?

The ending I found a tad confusing at first until the penny dropped.
I guess it's more devastating in the book because she didn't know Toby and Mick were the same man ? Bram landed her in it and what about the boys and the money and the house ?

I noticed that the photo he left was of them in Geneva, which is where he went.

I enjoyed it, and didn't really see the wooden acting so many are mentioning. I liked it much more than The Holiday (which was even worse than the book and I thought that was rubbish).

I couldn't get over how much Fi reminded me of Kate Middleton. And then I see her name is Tuppence Middleton. Bizarre!

the80sweregreat · 10/03/2022 22:22

The actress did look like Kate , DoC !
Same lovely clothes and same surname ( I know Kate isn't a Middleton anymore )
Maybe a long lost relative ?

I thought the spelling book was just a reminder that he cares about the kids.

I really enjoyed the book - it seemed much less implausible, I felt, and I felt much more sorry for the protagonist in the book that on the TV.

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 10/03/2022 22:31

What a twist at the end! Those poor boys. I thought maybe Bram had written something in the spelling book? I haven't read the original book.

hudyerwheesht · 10/03/2022 22:44

I kind of thought that, haudyourwheesht (hey, almost name twins!)

hudyerwheesht · 10/03/2022 22:45

Btw, I was bored enough to Google it earlier and Tuppence is no relation to any Middleton apparently

IcedPurple · 10/03/2022 22:48

I don't think she looks like Kate. I was getting major Posh Spice vibes from her in the black trouser suit with her hair tied back.

Realslimshady42 · 10/03/2022 23:18

Name changed for this as my real name is the same as the female protagonist 😂 but can honestly say there is no resemblance in looks, character or unfortunately house/ex-house. Unrelated to the above I really enjoyed this series and have downloaded the book (which tells you Bram is in Geneva on about page 2) and looking forward to finding out the finer details - think the spelling book and photo were definitely clues. Found the ending sad for their boys.

Furries · 11/03/2022 01:27

I kind of think the spelling book was left on top of the photo of them in Geneva to signify how he felt about his family (and maybe to help them know where to look for his body!)

The “gotcha” twist in the book was much better. But, all in all, it was pretty good for a four-parter.

the80sweregreat · 11/03/2022 06:37

The problem with making this a tv drama is we know that it's the same man scamming them both over , but it can be cleverly hidden in a book as a big twist , of course.
It is sad that Bram took off abroad and couldn't hide out somewhere closer to home and ride to his ex's rescue at the end.
If he hadn't been too keen on the women and drink and speeding , they could have kept their dream home and the tree. A cautionary tale all round

Yes, agree that it would make for quite a twist in the book. That said I didn't see it coming at all in the series and when Mike sat down next to them in the cafe I did say wtf out loud. With that sort of 3/4 part itv drama, any major twist is usually obvious a mile off.
I found the end a bit unsatisfying and sad for the boys but whenever things go South for a main character near the end I think it's the author/screenwriter making a moral point and Bram had the death of a child on him but Fi should have got away with her part, at least for the boys' sake.

the80sweregreat · 11/03/2022 19:13

Poor boys .. and the one who died too :(
It was a depressing drama.

Haudyourwheesht · 11/03/2022 19:47

It's a funny one, because who wins? Nobody really.

the80sweregreat · 11/03/2022 21:04

Maybe the writer was anti people who make millions out of bricks and mortar ?
.. some authors like to preach.

I really enjoyed the book but didn't think it was a good choice for tv, due to the twist being a damp squib.

I think the book ends with him sending an email to the police?

duchessofmuchos · 22/03/2022 22:01

@the80sweregreat

Who will get the money though ? Will the new owners get it back ? It's really bugging me and it's not even true!
The new owners didn't lose any money. They paid the £1.7m and got the house. It's just that it went to Fi via Bram rather than to Mike.
Hohofortherobbers · 22/03/2022 22:42

If he had planned to commit suicide, why didn't he do it before he sold the house? Then Fi wouldn't have lost the house she loved. I really enjoyed it but oh my the plot had holes.
