A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

@sakura06

Jin I almost wish I hadn't started, as now I can't wait until Saturday! I don't have the patience for weekly dramas (although managed with Hometown Cha Cha Cha).
I don’t have patience either, I wonder how I survived my childhood & teens with live TV & ads.

HTCCC was the only drama I watched live … loved it but I rather not wait every week.

sakura06 · 07/03/2022 13:44

I don't know how we used to manage either! I do think K dramas put a lot of cliffhangers in though. 25-21 is great so far though and avoiding spoilers can be challenging (The Swoon on Netflix gave away something)!

Metheven · 07/03/2022 17:38

JinBhoot I can watch some free shows on Viki on my laptop which I do. I also seem to have Rakuten Viki on my tv, which has some shows on, but the tv guide on it is really slow, so I am never sure what is coming up. Think it is a Samsung tv thing.

I have just started Hometown Cha Cha Cha and enjoying it so far. I am watching Business Proposal as the episodes come out, but I much prefer bingeing.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 07/03/2022 18:28

Amazon Fire stick has the Viki app for any interested parties 😁

Rowdythree · 07/03/2022 19:00

And Chromecast too

I've just spent the most boring hour at my dc's activity, with zero Internet or signal. Why oh why didn't I download some Netflix! What a mistake 🙄

No mistakes, only learning opportunities. You'll get it right next time 👍
FedUpWithBriiiiick · 07/03/2022 19:17

Right chingus, I'm going down for a few solid hours drama watching. I'll come up for air and decaf eventually.

polkettle · 07/03/2022 19:32

Business Proposal is a romp and a joy. Perfect Monday medicine.

Metheven · 07/03/2022 19:35

polkettle just waiting for husband to bugger off to bed, then I can watch.

boatyardblues · 07/03/2022 20:02

I was very pleased by today’s Business Proposal cliffhanger ending. 🙌 Of course, I was immediately annoyed that I couldn’t start the next episode immediately.

Loving Gong Yoo's thighs slippers in his insta story today

Metheven · 07/03/2022 21:25

Rowdythree they are lovely, aren't they?

Metheven · 07/03/2022 21:29

Ooh, just seen the cliffhanger in Business Proposal - love it. But I am not seeing a lot of chemistry between the two leads. Is it only me?

LarryUnderwood · 07/03/2022 21:48

Do I need to start Business Proposal tonight? Am drumming my heels waiting for FLAW and also need to watch ep 2 of Coffee Prince. But now v tempted by BP and 21/25.

Also is anyone watching bts livestream concert on Sunday morning? I haven't bought ticket yet but think I will.

Metheven · 07/03/2022 21:57

If it were me, LarryUnderwood I would wait until a few more episodes were out and concentrate on Coffee Prince with the lovely Gong Yoo.

Rowdythree · 07/03/2022 22:00

I haven't started Business Proposal yet either Larry, it sounds like a good one to binge do in going to wait a few more weeks.

LarryUnderwood · 07/03/2022 22:01

That's what I plumped for @Metheven, 10 mins into ep 2 now and it's delightfully daft, gong yoo is just lovely too.

Metheven · 07/03/2022 22:06

Good choice, LarryUnderwood (presume you are a fan of The Stand? Have you seen the new one yet?) Coffee Prince is just great, really makes me feel happy watching it.

I've started Strong Girl Bong-Soon whilst I wait for 25-21. The tone is a bit all over the place 😳 I thought it would be fun and fluffy but really dark so far! I like the interactions of the leads though so will stick with it!

AesopsMables · 08/03/2022 08:50

Juvenile Justice is not for the faint of heart. It is very brutal and the subject matter at times is hard to watch. It is however very good and justice does prevail at the end of each episode.

Stick with it! It's bonkers but good. All the chingus here are divided on the ending (it is 🐝 -friendly), but it's a great romp along the way!
polkettle · 08/03/2022 09:01

I find her face surgery so distracting that I don't think I can do JJ for that reason alone.
Loving all Mr Binn's non-cardboard doppelganger's pre-wedding sponsored photodumps 😍 That couple are milking their advertising cow to the last drop and I am Fully Supportive.
