So what was considered a gentleman in that era? What does aunt Ada mean when she says Marine has to promise to marry a gentleman?

No

A gentleman is someone who doesn't have to work ie. Manage their estate/keep an eye on their sticks etc

A lawyer has to work - professional class

Not sticks but stocks

A gentleman back then = inherited wealth, land and status. Bonus if you hail from distinguished family..
